Chapter 7 - Chapter 31: The Truth That Didn’t Leave

The silence after everything that had been said didn't disappear—it stayed, settled deep between Zein Shoin and Ace Craige, like something that had finally found its place and refused to move again, and even though Zein tried to return to the version of herself that had always been controlled, always distant, always unaffected, she realized that version no longer fit her the same way, because now every thought, every decision, every step she took was influenced by something.

She hadn't allowed before, something that made her hesitate in ways she never used to, something that made her stay when she could have left, and what made it worse—or maybe more real—was that Ace didn't push her the way he had before, didn't force answers or challenge every word, but instead watched her with a quiet understanding that made everything feel even more intense, as if he already knew what she was still trying to figure out.

"You're quieter," he said.

"I'm thinking," she said.

"About what?" he asked.

"…nothing important," she said.

"That's not true," he said.

"You don't know that," she said.

"I do," he said.

Zein exhaled softly.

"…stop saying that," she said.

"Stop proving it," he replied.

Zein looked at him.

"…you're doing it again," she said.

"Doing what?" he asked.

"Acting like you understand everything," she said.

"I don't understand everything," he said, "just you."

Zein's expression shifted slightly.

"That's not possible," she said.

"It is," he replied.

"…you're too sure," she said.

"And you're not sure enough," he said.

Zein crossed her arms slightly.

"…this isn't simple," she said.

"I never said it was," he replied.

"Then stop making it sound like it is," she said.

"I'm not," he said, "I'm just not avoiding it."

Zein's breath slowed.

"…I'm not avoiding anything," she said.

"You were," he said.

"…and now?" she asked.

Ace held her gaze.

"Now you're staying," he said.

Zein didn't deny it.

"…that doesn't mean anything," she said.

"It means everything," he replied.

Zein looked away briefly.

"…I don't like this," she said.

"I know," he said.

"Then why does it feel like you do?" she asked.

Ace paused.

"…because I do," he said.

Zein blinked.

"…why?" she asked.

"Because it's real," he said.

Zein's voice softened.

"…this changes things," she said.

"Yes," he replied.

"…are you okay with that?" she asked.

Ace didn't hesitate.

"Yes," he said.

Zein's breath slowed again.

"…so am I," she admitted quietly.

And that—

Made the silence between them feel different this time.

Not uncertain.

Not distant.

But real.
