"Well from what I can see it's mostly superficial damage. A bit of swelling and bruising, that sort of thing." Doc said after looking my eye over and even checking to see if there were any problems with it dilating or not.
"Well it's not like she was actually trying to mess me up. It was all instinct, no technique." I said with a shrug.
"Makes sense. Give it a few days to heal up and you'll be right as rain. Minus a bit of residual discoloration but that'll fade." He said with a nod.
"Thanks for the help Doc. What do I owe you?" I asked with a smile.
He shook his head "No charge, only needed these peepers after all." he said but I disagreed.
"No can do doc, a man does work he gets paid. Besides supplies aren't free so every little bit helps right?" I said giving him a wink with my good eye.
"Well I can't argue with that I suppose. Just give me whatever you think is right then." he said a little reluctantly.
I reached to my side and pulled open the small cloth pouch there and took out two hundred twenty caps and passed them to him.
"I'll pay for her treatment too. Call it an act of charity if you want." I said with a chuckle as I nodded at the courier.
"Wasn't going to charge her. Messy business getting shot in the head and being buried alive. Wouldn't feel right askin for money after that." he said seriously.
"Maybe but supplies ain't free. Something like that must have taken something right? Maybe two hundred caps doesn't take away the sting of that loss completely but it should help a bit. One good turn deserves another. Most of the wasteland's forgotten that." I said closing his fingers around the money.
"You're alright mister. Now get on out of here before Sunny bores a hole in the floor of the saloon from all the pacing she's bound to be doing." he said with a smile and a pat on the shoulder.
"Charity seems highly out of character for you. There must be something special about that woman." Adam said once we were out of earshot of anyone else.
"It's not charity partner, it's a gamble. When that woman wakes up. And she WILL wake up. She's going to have exactly two things running through her mind. The first is the fucker that shot her and the second is figuring out what comes next. Doc Mitchell's a good soul, honest and straightforward. He'll tell her about my "donation". And through that I can get a feel for her personality." I said calmly.
"I see. You are gambling that she'll be grateful to you." Adam said flatly.
"Yep. Time will tell if this gamble pays off or not." I said confidently.
I headed for the saloon to give Sunny the news on my mostly clean bill of health. She was relieved to hear it and visibly relaxed.-
Once that was done I headed back to her house to take a look at the AC system for the place. Much like on my own previous version of Earth AC was preloaded onto houses and being in Nevada as we were this was doubly so. The unit in this case was a indoor central one that was located in a closet with the intake outside the house. I cracked open the casing with my handy metal fingers and immediately saw a few problems. The first was blown capacitors, frayed wires and thick layer of dust.-
I went over to the general story that was just a old mini market turned into a store for things other than groceries. Chet, the pasty Caucasian guy who ran it, was all about pragmatism and haggled fiercely about even a single cap. Still I got a bottle of vodka and some spare electronics scrapped from the wasteland to repair the AC. It took me about an hour just to clean everything and swap out what I could and even then only because I had to go rip better parts off the other houses around town.-
"Here goes something." I muttered as I finally connected the unit to the power.
There was a hum of energy and an ominous groan but soon the intake unit kicked on along with the cooling system and the suit's sensors registered a drop in temperature in Sunny's house. I had it set for a neat seventy degrees which compared to the ninety to a hundred that was the average here was paradise. I didn't immediately call Sunny over however but took a moment to open my second to last daily pack. -
Yes tomorrow would mark exactly one week since I got yeeted into this world and the end of my daily card draws. I was a little nervous about this but not terribly since I had a solid five or six mana daily for emergencies via my artifacts. Speaking of I chose to open yet another Doctor Who pack as that pack had given me the most mana producing artifacts as well as lands. Watching the system pull up a pack and then the top of the pack get ripped off was, as always, satisfying to see. My new fifteen cards were laid out in front of me and I looked them over eagerly.-
Blasphemous act-sorcery, Talisman of conviction-artifact, Donna Noble-creature, Chaos warp-instant, The Sixth Doctor-creature, Foreboding ruins-land, Canyon slough-land, Four knocks-enchantment, Heroes podium-artifact, Rose Tyler-creature, Sheltered thicket-land, Out of time-enchantment, The Twelfth Doctor-creature, The Moment-artifact, Mountain-land.
"Fuck yeah! I got another talisman of conviction!" I said excitedly.
"If my memory serves that should give you seven mana minimum each day when these artifacts untap." Adam said seriously.
"That's right. I'll just get the summoning out of the way now." I said with a nod and tapped my signet, a talisman of this exact card and then Galadriel's phial.
It felt weird doing that while they were in my inventory but worked so I certainly wasn't going to complain. The new card popped out of my hand, spat out the red bowties depicted on it and then that turned back into a card as I stuffed it in my inventory. -
Seven mana.
Not so much that I could pop off absolutely everything possible but high enough that the list of things I couldn't summon with just these artifacts was VERY short. Honestly it barely even mattered what I drew out of my final daily pack tomorrow as whatever happened I was sitting on enough mana to get uncomfortably dangerous in an uncomfortably short amount of time.-
"I think I'll open another New Phyrexia pack tomorrow. I need more small cards to focus on summoning." I said thoughtfully.
"A good plan. First an army, then an empire." Adam said encouragingly.
"You really need to let that go." I said rolling my eyes.
"Never." Adam replied stealing my fucking line.
