Chapter 29 - Awakening

I considered joining her on that errand but changed my mind when I spotted something.

'And the dead shall walk the Earth to bring vengeance down upon the wicked.' I thought with a grin.

The now vault suit wearing courier squinted in the harsh sunlight as her eyes adjusted. She easily spotted my shiny armored ass and walked on unsteady feet towards me.

"Howdy stranger. Good to see you back among the living." I said still grinning.

"Doc said you paid for my treatment. Thank you." she said with a smooth but firm voice.

"Think nothing of it. By my reckoning you aught to be going after the fellow that shot you yeah?" I asked knowingly.

"Don't know what i'll do once I catch the bastard but I want answers from him." she said angrily.

"Tell me about this guy, I might be able to tell you something about him. Might have even passed him on the road on my way down here." I said casually.

"Black and white checkered suit, funny way of talking. Had three guys with him, they had red helmet wearing faces on their jackets." she said scrunching her eyebrows up as she tried to recall.

"Not ringing a bell but that image you mentioned does. Should be Great Khans. Old gang that came out a vault originally. Probably hired muscle if I had to guess though, they mostly run chems. Maybe ask around town, someone else might know more." I said half lying.

I was honest about what the Great Khans were about but I lied flat out about Benny. I knew exactly who he was, exactly where he was going and why he acted to begin with. Telling her all that would ruin the story though so I'd let her put all the pieces together on her own.-

She thanked me again and left after that and I watched her go talk to Victor, the securitron. Securitron's were one of the most "modern" varieties of robot with a single wheel they moved around on and bodies literally made for war. A machinegun in one arm, laser in the other. Square "shoulders" that were actually missile launchers and armor plating covering everywhere. Even the screens that you'd think would be a weak point were made of bullet proof glass. You could take them down but it would take a serious effort.-

The funny part was despite everything I just mentioned only half of it was available to them as the software update data to upgrade them to use it all was lost once the bombs started dropping. The data was stored on a single poker chip that was recently found and so very close to being returned to Mr. House when Benny struck and took it from the courier before tying up that loose end. Except he didn't. Now the courier was coming for him and I was coming along for the ride.-

'I better not miss a damned thing.' I thought grinning widely.

The courier moved like a force of nature once she got going. She joined Sunny on the trip to chase the geckos from the water sources and killed the mean buggers easily. The interesting part was that it was also quite clear that she had lost most of her memories. She remembered Benny and getting shot but everything past that was basically gone. This made her prowess a type of terrifying muscle memory. Soon the Powder ganger known as Joe Cobb came into town to threaten the town into handing over Ringo. The courier militia'd up the town and killed the guy and his friends when they came.-

"Shame you aren't sticking around any longer. Was really enjoying your company." Sunny said as I let her know I was setting out.

"It was always going to happen. Winds blowing again and I go with it." I said with a shrug.

"The wind huh? That what she's going by?" she asked nodding towards the courier.

"It's not like that. She's something special. You've seen her in action. It took her what? Three hours to get the town on board with fighting the Gangers?" I said and she reluctantly nodded in agreement.

"It was something alright." she said with a sigh.

"Right? Besides, she's already lost several days on the guy who shot her and I have a working motorbike." I said with a chuckle.

"Still can't get over that. If you didn't have that armor I might even be worried about someone killing you for it." she said shaking her head before dragging me over to Chet. "You get the thing I wanted done yet?" she asked the man and he nodded.

"Trudy helped with the stitching so I barely managed it." he said going into his shop and coming out with a folded up leather object.

"You stick out worse than an unhammered nail. Figured I'd get something for you to fix that problem. Least until you can fix it yourself." Sunny said as she held up the thing and let it unfold.

It was a plain tanned brown leather duster that was quite big to go over my armor. I slipped it on and moved a bit.

"Fits good. Probably makes me look weird as shit though." I said with a chuckle.

"Better than being a walking mirror." she said with a smile. "If you ever get tired of wandering feel free to come back you hear? Goodsprings will always have a place for you." she said before giving me one last kiss and walking into the saloon.

'I doubt it.' I thought shaking my head slightly.

"Sure you don't want to stay, she looked pretty reluctant to see you leave?" The courier asked as I walked over.

"Nah, I'm a wanderer. I wasn't going to stay much longer even if I didn't have a reason to leave." I said honestly.

"Cold. I don't think I could do that myself. Get someone attached only to cut them off like that I mean." she said seriously.

"I told her from the start that it was only temporary. What came after that is on her." I said with a shrug as I swung my leg over my bike and started it up.

"I suppose so." she said shaking her head before sitting behind me and grabbing my waist so she didn't fall off as the bike got going.
