The night sky above the Temple of Stars had changed.
Where hundreds of stars once shone brightly, dark gaps now stretched across the heavens.
Aren stood frozen as another star faded away.
Gone.
Just like that.
"It can't be happening," Kael whispered.
Lyra's face was pale.
"It is."
The wind howled through the broken temple as cracks spread across the giant crystal tower.
Pieces of glowing crystal fell to the floor.
The ancient structure was dying.
Just like the stars.
Suddenly, a bright light emerged from the crystal tower.
A glowing figure appeared before them.
A woman made entirely of starlight.
Her silver hair floated like light itself.
Her eyes held the brilliance of a thousand stars.
The three friends stepped back in surprise.
"Who are you?" Aren asked.
The figure smiled sadly.
"I am Seraphina."
"The First Star Keeper."
The name appeared in countless legends.
The guardian chosen by the stars themselves.
Aren couldn't believe she was real.
Seraphina looked toward the fading sky.
"The Darkness is returning."
"What darkness?" Kael asked.
The Star Keeper raised her hand.
Images appeared in the air.
Thousands of years ago, before Elyndor existed, there had been another kingdom.
A kingdom destroyed by a creature known as The Void King.
It fed upon starlight.
It consumed worlds.
It turned entire skies black.
The ancient Star Keepers had sacrificed everything to imprison it beyond the stars.
"But prisons do not last forever," Seraphina said.
Aren felt his stomach tighten.
"The Fallen King wants to free it?"
Seraphina nodded.
"He believes the Void King will grant him unlimited power."
The chamber grew darker.
Another star vanished from the sky.
Seraphina looked directly at Aren.
"The Heart Shard chose you for a reason."
Aren lowered his gaze.
"I'm not a hero."
"You don't need to be."
Her voice was gentle.
"You only need the courage to keep moving forward."
The words reminded him of his father.
For the first time since leaving home, Aren felt a spark of hope.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed through the mountains.
The ground shook violently.
The temple trembled.
Outside, black clouds covered the sky.
Lightning flashed across the darkness.
Lyra rushed toward the entrance.
Her eyes widened.
"Aren!"
The others ran outside.
What they saw made their blood run cold.
Far away on the horizon stood a gigantic black tower.
It hadn't existed before.
The structure pierced the clouds like a spear.
Dark energy spiraled around it.
"The Shadow Spire," Seraphina whispered.
"The Fallen King's fortress."
Kael stared in disbelief.
"That thing appeared overnight?"
"The barrier between worlds is weakening."
The tower was growing stronger.
And so was the darkness.
Aren looked toward the distant fortress.
Fear filled his heart.
But beneath the fear was determination.
The kingdom needed them.
The stars needed them.
He turned toward his friends.
"We're going there."
Kael grinned.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
Lyra smiled.
"Then let's finish this."
For the first time in days, they all laughed.
Not because they weren't afraid.
But because they finally knew what they had to do.
High within the Shadow Spire, the Fallen King stood before a massive black crystal.
Dark energy flowed through its surface.
Inside the crystal, something enormous moved.
Something ancient.
Two glowing violet eyes slowly opened.
The Fallen King bowed his head.
"My king."
A deep voice echoed from within the crystal.
The voice sounded like the end of all things.
"The stars weaken."
"Soon... I will be free."
Far above Elyndor, another star vanished.
Then another.
And another.
The countdown had begun.
