Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 16 — The Eye-Opening Grid

The room did not return to normal.

It wasn't because something was still standing inside it, or because any sound remained. It was because of something far more difficult to explain: the very sense of "normalcy" had vanished from the space. It was as if that small room had been touched by something beyond the boundaries of human understanding, and it could never truly return to being an ordinary space again.

Lin Xuan still stood in the center of the room. His hand gripped his phone stiffly. The device's screen was no longer entirely his own. There was a systemic layer he couldn't close, couldn't delete, and couldn't ignore.

📡 SUBJECT REGISTERED IN MAIN OBSERVATION GRID

"...I'm really inside that system now," Lin Xuan muttered softly. His voice didn't echo, but it felt heavy.

Long Yuer stood near the window. She didn't move, yet the atmosphere around her was different than before. It was as if she were holding something back—something invisible that kept pressing in from the outside.

"Not entirely inside," she finally said. "...Still half-bound."

Lin Xuan turned his head. "...Half?"

Long Yuer let out a soft sigh. "Now you exist in two systems at once. The human system, and their Grid system."

Lin Xuan frowned. "...What exactly is the Grid?"

Long Yuer fell silent for a moment. "...It's not a place. It's not an organization. It is a connected observation structure."

"...Observation structure?"

"Every individual who enters it no longer stands alone. They become nodes in a network that read and evaluate each other."

Lin Xuan fell silent. "...Like the internet?"

Long Yuer shook her head slowly. "...Worse. Because you aren't just sending data. You are being judged directly by the system itself."

Silence.

Lin Xuan stared at his phone. Something that wasn't there before now appeared on the screen: a small, blinking dot. Then, slowly—several other dots appeared around it. They were blurry. Unstable. But real.

"...Is this me?" Lin Xuan whispered.

Long Yuer nodded. "...That is your position in the Grid."

Lin Xuan stared at the dot for a long time. "...And the others?"

Long Yuer remained silent a bit longer than usual. "...Other subjects."

That phrase felt heavier than it should have. Lin Xuan took a breath. "...So I'm not alone."

Long Yuer answered flatly, "...You never were."

Suddenly, Lin Xuan's phone vibrated. It wasn't a normal vibration. It was deeper, as if it weren't just the device, but something much larger responding.

📡 GRID SYNCHRONIZATION SIGNAL DETECTED

Lin Xuan immediately tensed up. "...Now what?"

Long Yuer stared sharply at the screen. "...They are activating a synchronization of all nodes."

"...Those nodes are all like me?"

"Yes."

"...For what?"

"To align the data of all newly detected subjects."

Lin Xuan looked at her. "...Meaning I'm being compared?"

Long Yuer nodded. "...All subjects are being re-mapped."

"...And if I'm different?"

Long Yuer replied softly, "...That is exactly why you are being observed."

Outside the room, the night wind changed direction. It wasn't strong. It wasn't extreme. But it felt unnatural—as if the world were adjusting something invisible.

Lin Xuan felt something in his head. It wasn't pressure, but like another "consciousness" trying to touch him from a distance.

"...This isn't the Observer anymore..." he muttered.

Long Yuer turned instantly. "...This is the Grid."

"...The Grid can touch my thoughts?"

"...If you're already connected, yes."

Lin Xuan exhaled slowly. "...So this is bigger than that Observer?"

Long Yuer answered without hesitation, "...The Observer is merely the executor. The Grid is the primary system."

Silence. And for the first time, Lin Xuan truly felt like he wasn't an individual, but a tiny part of something vast.

His phone changed again.

📡 SECONDARY NODE LINK ESTABLISHED

"...Now there's more than one path?" Lin Xuan muttered.

Long Yuer didn't answer immediately. Her eyes remained sharp, as if reading something invisible. "...It's not just more than one. You've only just seen the first layer."

Lin Xuan stared at her. "...How deep does this system go?"

Long Yuer replied softly, "...Deeper than the world you know."

Suddenly, the room lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then they stabilized. Lin Xuan stiffened. "...What was that?"

Long Yuer raised her hand slightly. "...Grid resonance."

"...Meaning?"

"...There is a shift in observation focus."

Lin Xuan turned quickly. "...To whom?"

Long Yuer answered quietly, "...To you."

Silence. And in that moment, Lin Xuan's phone displayed a new message.

📡 RECOGNITION LEVEL: INCREASING

Lin Xuan read it slowly. "...They realize that I'm aware?"

Long Yuer nodded. "...And that changes how they treat you."

Outside the room—in the hallway of the boarding house—footsteps were heard. Slow. Too rhythmic. Too inhuman in their pace.

Lin Xuan turned toward the door. "...Are they coming back?"

Long Yuer didn't answer directly. Instead, she stepped forward slightly, blocking the line between Lin Xuan and the door. "...It's not just one," she said quietly.

Lin Xuan tensed. "...How many?"

Long Yuer replied: "...Several Observer units."

Lin Xuan's phone changed again.

📡 MULTIPLE OBSERVER UNITS DEPLOYING

Lin Xuan stared at the screen for a long time. "...Is this just the beginning?"

Long Yuer replied softly, "...This is the response to your awareness."

The footsteps outside became clearer. Not one. Not two. More than that. And this time, they didn't stop on the floor below. They stopped right in front of the room door.

Quiet. No knocking. No initial sound. Just a presence.

And then, a voice appeared. Not from outside. Not from the door. But directly inside their heads.

"SUBJECT CONFIRMED."

Lin Xuan froze. "...They're here."

Long Yuer exhaled slowly. "...And this time, they aren't judging from a distance."

The door vibrated slightly. It didn't swing open, but it felt as if it were being "adjusted by the system."

Lin Xuan's phone changed once more.

📡 DIRECT GRID ACCESS INITIATED

Lin Xuan stared at the screen. "...What's going to happen now?"

Long Yuer answered softly, "...Now, you will be tested directly by the Grid."

"...What does that mean?"

Long Yuer looked at him. "...Now you are no longer a remote observation subject. You are an active node in their system."

And at that moment, the door slowly opened on its own. It wasn't pushed. It wasn't physically opened. It was as if reality itself "allowed" the opening to happen.

And from behind the door, several figures stood. They were unclear. Not entirely human. But real enough to make the world feel narrower than ever before.

Lin Xuan stared at them. Silent.

And on his phone, one final line appeared.

📡 SUBJECT LIN XUAN: ENTERING SECOND OBSERVATION PHASE

Lin Xuan whispered softly, "...So this is only the second phase..."

Long Yuer answered quietly beside him, "...And they haven't even started truly testing you yet."
