Chapter 11 - THE ONES WHO HUNT

Chapter 11: The Ones Who Hunt

A scraping noise echoed down the corridor, closer now, Heavier….like something that had learned to move but hadn't mastered it. Emily's lungs froze. Not calm—motionless.

Thin strands of shadow stretched toward the corridor's dark end, reaching out like fingers hunting for an unseen prize.

"They found you" Lucien had warned. Now she understood, this was no accident. It was deliberate.

The air shifted, colder and sharper, as if the very walls recoiled from whatever approached.

"Stay behind me." Lucien's voice was low and steady, but urgent. This was readiness, not mere caution.

She obeyed, sliding back until she was just out of his path but still watching the darkness.

At the far end, the shadows warped. First a distortion—movement that shouldn't be there. Then a shape stepped into the dim light. Emily recoiled. It was wrong in every way too tall, too thin, joints bending in impossible directions. Its body wasn't flesh but compacted shadow, held together by some unseen force. Where its face should have been, there was only a hollow void and within that emptiness, something seemed to stare back.

Another scrape sounded behind it. A second creature emerged, then a third. Emily's heart pounded. "…There's more" she whispered. Lucien said nothing, but she saw him brace. He knew exactly what was coming.

The first creature cocked its head, slow and deliberate. Then it lunged—blurring between solid and shadow. Emily gasped. Lucien leapt forward, hand raised. A silent shockwave ripped through the air, slamming the creature into the wall with a crack. It splattered into inky rivulets, then reformed instantly.

Emily's chest tightened. "It didn't…."

"Stay back," Lucien snapped.

The second creature darted in. Lucien met it with precise, fluid movements, binding it in writhing shadows. It screamed—a hollow, otherworldly sound and dissolved into nothing.

Emily stared. "What are they…?"

No answer came. More shapes poured out of the gloom….three, then five….each twisting and reforming as they advanced.

Lucien shifted his stance, not retreating but preparing. "Emily" Her breath caught.

"Yes?"

"When they move—don't think. React."

Her mind protested. He added, "They're connected to you."

The nearest creature reached the edge of light. For a heartbeat, Emily felt it—recognition that wasn't her own. It knew her.

The shadows at her feet stirred without command, surging forward. Emily inhaled sharply. "I.."

Don't think.

She closed her mind and acted.

The shadows coiled around one creature mid-lunge, freezing it inches from her. Emily gasped. "I…."

"Good." Lucien's approval cut through her shock.

The beasts attacked all at once. Lucien intercepted two with deliberate strikes. But three slipped past him, heading straight for Emily.

Her muscles locked..then moved. The shadows obeyed, crushing a second creature until it vanished.

Emily's vision blurred. Before she could process, a new impact sent a third creature flying. Kai burst into view, breath ragged. "Try not to die," he muttered, then dove into the fray.

From the opposite side, Mira emerged, her arms rising as the air tightened around another shadow-being, locking it in place. "Focus" she said softly.

Darius arrived last, stepping forward to meet the final creature head-on. His blow cracked through the corridor and the creature disintegrated.

Emily watched, awestruck by their control. She was still reacting, still learning. A fifth creature drifted toward her, empty gaze fixed. The connection pulsed stronger. "…What are you?" she whispered.

The creature answered with motion. The surrounding shadows began to mimic its writhing shape. For a moment, Emily froze. Then it lunged. She let instinct take over. The shadows surged—merging with the creature rather than destroying it.

The corridor fell silent. For an instant, everything paused—and then the creature collapsed, absorbed into Emily's darkness.

She staggered back. "What…"

Her mark burned, pulsing bright and hungry. The remaining creatures recoiled, then backed away…not in fear, but in recognition.

Silence settled like a shroud. Emily's breath echoed against the stone.

"Why did they stop?" Kai asked.

No one answered. They were all watching her.

Lucien stepped forward. "Emily, what did you just do?"

Her chest tightened. "I… I don't know," she whispered. But deep down, she did. And that terrified her.

The shadows receded, but the mark on her arm glowed steadily, alive. Far beyond the corridor, something sensed it. And this time…it smiled.
