Chapter 16 - THE ONES WHO CLAIM

Chapter 16: The Ones Who Claim

The shadows didn't just rise….

They answered.

They curled outward from Emily's feet like living smoke, thickening the air, darkening the street until even the dim glow of the streetlight seemed to bend away from her.

The night recoiled.

Lena stumbled back, her grip tightening painfully around Emily's arm.

"Emily…..Emily, what are you doing?"

Emily didn't answer.

Because for the first time, she wasn't reacting.

She was choosing.

The power didn't surge wildly this time, it moved with intention. With awareness.

Her breathing slowed, her heartbeat steadied.

And the shadows followed.

Across the street, the two strangers stilled—not in fear, but in calculation.

The taller one's smile didn't fade.

But his eyes sharpened.

"…There it is," he murmured.

"Control."

The second man shifted slightly, his stance lowering just enough to signal readiness.

"She's stabilizing faster than expected."

Emily heard them.

Every word.

And somehow…

She understood the weight behind them.

Her mate stepped closer to her side, his presence suddenly heavier, more defined.

"Don't let them provoke you," he said under his breath.

Emily's jaw tightened.

"Funny" she replied quietly.

"Now you care what happens to me?"

He didn't respond immediately.

And that silence said more than anything else.

The taller man took another step forward.

"Emotions make it easier" he said calmly.

"They always do."

Emily's gaze snapped back to him.

"What do you know about me?" she demanded.

He smiled again….

But this time, it didn't feel human.

"More than you know about yourself."

The mark burned, not painfully…

But sharply.

Like recognition.

The shadows around her twisted, reacting instantly, pressing closer to her form as if shielding her from something unseen.

Lena gasped softly.

"Emily… it's like they're protecting you."

"They're not just protecting her" the second man corrected quietly.

"They're responding."

"To what?" Lena asked, her voice barely holding together.

He didn't look at her.

"To what she is."

Silence fell again.

Thicker this time.

Emily's fingers curled slowly at her sides.

"I'm not something you get to define" she said.

The taller man tilted his head slightly.

"No" he agreed.

"But you are something that must be contained." The word hit differently.

Contained.

Not protected.

Not guided.

Controlled.

Something inside Emily shifted, cold, sharp.

"You don't get to decide that either," she said.

The shadows surged higher.

Not wildly.

Deliberately.

They stretched behind her like wings made of darkness, flickering and folding with unnatural fluidity.

Her mate's expression changed.

Not just tension-

Recognition.

"…That's not just shadow manipulation" he muttered.

The second man's gaze darkened slightly.

"No" he said.

"…it isn't."

The air thickened, pressure built slowly.

Like something larger was pressing down on all of them at once.

Emily felt it.

That same presence from before.

Faint.

But there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her breath caught..Just for a second.

The taller man noticed immediately.

"…You feel it too," he said softly.

Emily didn't answer.

Because she did.

And that terrified her more than anything else in that moment.

Her mate stepped slightly in front of her now.

Not blocking her—

But positioning himself between her and them.

"You need to leave," he said, his voice lower now, edged with warning.

The taller man's smile widened slightly.

"And you need to understand your place."

The tension snapped tighter.

Lena's voice shook behind Emily.

"I think we should go, like righ now…."

"No," Emily said.

The word came out calm.

Too calm.

Everyone stilled.

Even her mate.

"I'm not running anymore."

The silence that followed was absolute.

The second man studied her more carefully now.

"…Interesting."

The taller one nodded slightly.

"Yes," he agreed.

"Very."

Then…

Without warning…he moved, not fast.

But suddenly.

The space between them collapsed in an instant…

And the shadows reacted.

Violently.

They surged forward, colliding with something invisible just before he reached her.

A shockwave rippled through the air.

Emily staggered…..but didn't fall.

Her eyes widened slightly. That wasn't her doing. Not entirely.

The shadows had moved on their own.

Protecting her.

The man stopped just outside their reach, his expression shifting for the first time.

Not fear.

Interest.

"…Adaptive" he murmured.

Her mate stepped forward instantly, energy flaring faintly around him.

"You're done here."

The second man moved now too, positioning himself just behind the first.

"We're just getting started." The air warped again.

Emily felt the pull.

Stronger this time.

Not from them.

From something deeper.

The mark burned….hotter, her vision flickered..

For a split second—She saw it again.

That endless darkness, that presence.

Watching, Waiting, Her breath hitched.

The connection snapped. Reality rushed back.

But something had changed.

The shadows around her weren't just reacting anymore.

They were listening.

To her.

The taller man straightened slightly.

"…It's progressing faster than expected," he said quietly. The second man nodded.

"Then we don't delay" Emily's chest tightened.

"You're not taking me anywhere" she said.

The first man looked at her and for the first time…

There was no amusement in his expression.

"Emily" he said softly, and her name….

From his lips…

Felt wrong.

Like it didn't belong to her anymore.

"You don't understand what you are yet."

The shadows stirred again.

Darker.

Deeper.

"But you will."

The air collapsed inward..Power surged,

And this time—

Emily didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward.

Into it.

And the shadows followed.
