Chapter 15 - FRACTURES AT HOME

Chapter 15: Fractures at Home

The quiet that followed wasn't relief, it was restraint. The chamber still trembled faintly, as if recovering from something too immense to settle. Dust hung in the air. The shadows had withdrawn…but not entirely. They lingered. Watching.

Emily's breaths were ragged as Lucien held her steady. His grip was solid, grounding—but there was something different now, not just protection, Caution.

"You're hurt" he said softly.

"I'm fine."

Her reply was too quick, too hollow. Beneath her skin, the mark pulsed slow and deliberate—no longer wild, no longer chaotic. Something had changed.

Mira stepped forward, her eyes sharp and calculating.

"You connected with it."

Not a question.

Emily hesitated. "…I didn't mean to."

"That's not what I asked."

Silence stretched. Emily swallowed "I saw something."

Darius scoffed as he rolled his shoulder, as if shrugging off their earlier collision. "Next time, don't."

Kai exhaled. "Yeah, because that worked out so well for us."

Emily said nothing…because the truth was, it hadn't felt wrong. Lucien saw it. Of course he did, his eyes narrowed.

"What did it show you?"

Emily shook her head. "It wasn't images. It was… something else." She searched for the words. "…as if it knew me."

Those words hit harder than anything else. Mira's expression tightened. Darius stiffened. Even Kai fell silent. Lucien's jaw clenched.

"We're leaving."

No one argued. They all felt it. It wasn't over.

The Walk Back

Outside, the world felt… wrong. Not darker, not quieter…just oblivious. Streetlights flickered lazily, cars passed. Laughter echoed in the distance. Life went on.

Emily trailed behind, her steps slow, her mind elsewhere. The mark pulsed again. Rhythmic. Listening.

"You shouldn't go home alone." Mira's voice cut through her thoughts.

Emily lifted her head. "I'm not alone," she said softly. It wasn't reassuring. Mira noticed. Lucien stepped to her side.

"That's exactly the problem."

Emily met his gaze. "For me, or for them?"

Lucien hesitated. That said everything.

"I need to see my mom" she insisted.

"You don't know if someone's following you."

"I also don't know if they'd follow me home."

Darius muttered, "She's got a point." Lucien ignored him, eyes locked on Emily. Tense.

"…I'll come with you," he finally said.

"No" The word was immediate, firm. Emily shook her head. "If something's watching me, I won't risk my family because of you."

"That's not your decision."

"It is tonight."

The silence that fell between them was heavy and unresolved. Then Lucien exhaled slowly.

"…Call me if anything feels off."

Emily nodded faintly. Everything already felt off.

Home

The door creaked as Emily opened it. Warm light spilled across the floor….familiar, comforting, wrong.

"Emily?" Her mother's voice trembled with worry. "There you are….I've been calling…." She froze when she really saw her daughter. "…What happened?"

Emily forced a small smile. "Nothing. I just stayed out too late."

Her mother didn't believe it. "You look exhausted. Sit down."

Emily complied, her body suddenly heavy. Her mother knelt, brushing back her hair. "You're freezing." Emily flinched—small, but noticed.

"…Emily." Her mother's voice softened. "What's going on?" The question lingered.

Emily opened her mouth, then closed it. How do you explain the unexplainable?

"I'm just tired" she whispered. Her mother watched her for a long moment, then sighed.

"I'll get you something to eat."

As she rose, the lights flickered once….briefly, but unmistakably. Emily's head snapped up.

"…Did you see that?"

"See what?"

The lights steadied, and the room looked normal. But Emily's chest tightened. It wasn't random, it was closer now.

Later That Night

The house was too quiet. Emily sat on her bed, staring at her arm. The mark pulsed faintly. Waiting.

A soft tap sounded at her window. Emily froze. Tap—deliberate, her heart thudded. She rose and crept forward. The shadows in her room shifted, almost imperceptibly, following her.

At the window, she hesitated. Something felt off, She swept back the curtain. Lena stood outside, her breath uneven, eyes wide with alarm.

"Emily" she whispered urgently. "Open the window."

Emily did "What are you doing here so late?"

Lena climbed halfway in, glancing over her shoulder. "They're watching you."

Emily's pulse spiked. "What do you mean?"

Lena stepped closer. "Didn't you notice how things move around you now?"

Emily hesitated. "Notice what?"

Lena's voice dropped. "I've seen it—at the gala, afterward, tonight." Emily's chest constricted. "You should've told me."

"I didn't know how."

Before Emily could answer, a voice cut through the night—cold and familiar:

"Still pretending?"

Emily froze. Slowly, she turned. Across the street, under a flickering lamp, he stood—the one who'd rejected her, broken her, unleashed all this. His gaze locked onto hers.

"You should have stayed broken."

His words landed like stones. Pain flared in Emily's chest—then something darker surged.

"You don't get to show up here" she said, voice trembling but steady.

He stepped forward, deliberate. "No" he said softly. "I had to."

The air shifted. The shadows at Emily's feet stirred. This time—he saw them. Shock passed over his face—no guilt, no regret.

"…What have you become?" he asked.

Emily didn't answer. She didn't know. But the shadows behind her rose, no longer hidden. Lena backed away, fear on her face.

"Emily…"

But Emily didn't look at her. She stared at him, at the past that broke her and the present that made her feel anything but weak. Because something inside her—once shattered, was awakening. And this time—she wasn't afraid.
