Her Greatest Enemy was Never Me
Lilith slammed the door.
We had barely crossed the threshold when Father stepped out from his study. He stood stiffly, as if bracing for a verdict, though his eyes were already demanding one.
"How was it? How were you received?" he asked. His gaze flicked from Lilith's pale face to my calm one.
I inhaled, ready to give a concise careful explanation.
But Lilith broke.
"It was a disaster! She ruined everything! She made me look like a fool!" she wailed, stumbling toward the stairs as if fleeing a battlefield.
Father's head snapped toward me, confusion and irritation darkening his features.
"Alayna? Did you disrupt the apology?"
I waited, letting Lilith's frantic footsteps disappear upstairs. Then, with steady composure, I spoke.
