Chapter 38 - Chapter 39: The First Practice with the Lightsaber

"Try to feel the Force around you and your own Force. Don't get distracted," said Obi-Wan.

"Yes, Master."

Sitting cross-legged, Amir slowly controlled his body to float up.

In an instant, he felt as if he were riding the wind. The next moment, he felt as if he could fly. However, as soon as he lost his focus, he fell right back down.

Fortunately, the ground below was sandy, so he didn't get hurt.

"You must always maintain your connection with the Force. If you can't concentrate during meditation, you won't be able to do so in battle."

Amir felt a bit embarrassed. He knew he would fail if he lost focus, but he couldn't help it.

"Meditate regularly to deepen your connection with the Force and uncover the knowledge hidden within it." Obi-Wan, who was also seated cross-legged on the ground, spoke as he floated steadily in the air. "The skills of Jedi Knights are insights gained by our predecessors through the Force, but these are merely a tiny fraction of its vastness."

Amir focused even more intently. The Force flowed around him, passing through his body and dispersing outward.

Gradually, more and more of the Force swirled and intertwined with Amir's own, slowly lifting him off the ground.

At that moment, a boulder the size of a land speeder floated gently upward, as effortlessly as the small pebbles around it.

"Very good. Size doesn't matter. You've already grasped this point."

"It's over."

As if in response to Obi-Wan's words, the floating sand and stones slowly descended with Amir.

"The Force within you is very powerful, Amir. If this were before, I could have measured the number of midi-chlorians in your body."

"midi-chlorians?" Amir asked.

"The Force originates from all life in the universe, surrounding and permeating us. Most life cannot perceive its existence. Only a select few—those with a large number of midi-chlorian particles within their bodies—can."

"midi-chlorians are microorganisms closely tied to life. Their quantity determines the upper limit of your Force usage."

"But nothing is absolute, right?" Amir asked.

"Of course."

Amir couldn't sense how many midi-chlorians he had, but Obi-Wan said there were quite a few, so he figured it was a decent amount.

He wondered how much he differed from that person. Amir thought of Anakin, who was also on Tatooine. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn had discovered the boy and found that he had an abnormally high number of midi-chlorian cells in his body.

This child had proven his potential through his rapid progress.

"Thinking frequently is a good thing, but do not disconnect from the Force," Obi-Wan said, noticing Amir's distraction.

Amir didn't usually connect with the Force much for two reasons. First, he was afraid of being discovered. Who could say for sure what the Force was? He had only used it once, and Obi-Wan had sensed it. If Darth Vader found out, it would be disastrous.

However, Obi-Wan had taught him how to control it. As long as he kept the scattered Force within a certain range, it wouldn't be detected.

Second, it was too easy to forget before it became a habit. Once he started doing something, he would disconnect from the Force.

"Take out your lightsaber. You need to learn how to use this weapon." Obi-Wan took his lightsaber out of a box in the house. This lightsaber, its surface covered in wear and tear, had always been by his side.

He had crafted the blue-bladed lightsaber after being promoted to Jedi Master and used it throughout the Clone Wars.

Its makeshift design left a deep impression on Amir. Its components resembled a jet engine balance tube, a grenade part, a square flash battery, and a faucet handle at the tail.

Amir took out the lightsaber, which had no visible switch. He used the Force to analyze its structure and successfully activated the switch. The blade turned blue.

Obi-Wan opened the lightsaber and stood with his left foot forward, slightly bent, arms extended downward and forward. He held the lightsaber with both hands, the right above and the left below. The blade pointed straight ahead and slightly forward. He said, "I used to practice this form often when I was still an apprentice. It's simple, but powerful."

Amir assumed the same stance and followed Obi-Wan's movements.

"Every member of the Jedi Order has trained in this form. It is the oldest sword technique, designed to defeat an opponent without causing serious injury."

"You can use this technique to handle almost any situation."

Obi-Wan demonstrated, starting with a blocking stance and raising his sword behind his shoulder. He pushed forward from different directions.

The sword movements were large, and few techniques required the use of the Force. Amir had an excellent memory and imitated the movements precisely, quickly mastering them.

Next came other starting stances and various defensive and offensive techniques, which Amir memorized after seeing them once.

"There used to be a machine, but it broke. That machine could train you to block blaster beams." After finishing a round of teaching, Obi-Wan sat down on a stone by the door.

"A machine? Broken?" Amir's interest was piqued. Although he had been practicing patiently and enjoying it, he felt uneasy at the mention of machinery.

"In that corner," Obi-Wan said, pointing.

Amir really wanted to go and take a look, but he insisted on finishing this round of practice. He carefully recalled and experienced the details of the movements.

"Zennn."

After putting away his lightsaber, Amir took a deep breath, walked to the corner, and picked up the spherical object.

Unfortunately, he had no tools and didn't know how to handle it.

"Tomorrow, I'll go back to Mos Eisley and bring the ship over." Amir had already found a stone platform nearby where he could park the ship.

Finding Obi-Wan was easier than he had imagined. He had been prepared to walk through the desert for days, as it was only while walking on this land that Amir could feel the guidance of the Force.

Now, however, it seemed that perhaps it was because, at that moment, he was most focused, with all his attention concentrated on his connection with the Force.

Setting down the spherical object, Amir activated his lightsaber once more and performed the "Heh-Cho" form.

All great things require tedious training, and Amir knew this well. But he had a deep admiration for the lightsaber, and it gave him the patience to endure, like a machine.

As he listened to the low hum of the lightsaber, time flew by.

As the red and white suns slowly disappeared on the horizon, Amir finished his training for the day.

Shaking his slightly sore arms, he walked into the small hut.

Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine was indeed harsh. He was just like the countless vagabonds on Tatooine: disheveled and impoverished.

But he was different. His eyes were always bright and deep, always thinking and seemingly learning.
