Chapter 33 - The Elders’ Attention

The chatter around the battlefield died down instantly. We could feel the ground beneath our feet trembling. So we all stopped cold and looked in one direction.

"No…" Niven whispered. "Not again."

From the same direction they had appeared before, more beasts appeared. From where I stood, I could make out more lizards and snakes, no other kind of beast, which was a small relief, but the number was many more than before, at about thirty.

My throat clenched. "How many of these things are out here? Could this be like a wave of attacks?"

Panic rippled through some of the least experienced warriors. The first fight had drained most of us, and though no one had died, many were battered and exhausted. Yet another wave of beasts came, like a nightmare.

The commander, Tua Tahir, barked orders, rallying the warriors back into position. "Form up, men! Spears forward! Hold the line!"

Khaal growled beside me. "This is madness. We won't hold twice."
