Chapter 20 - THE CULTIVATION ALLIANCE ASSEMBLY

The Cultivation Alliance Assembly was held in the Celestial City, neutral ground where all major sects maintained embassies. Liang Qiu brought Kai and Yuhan as witnesses, their youth making the evidence they carried even more damning.

The assembly hall was magnificent—a massive dome supported by pillars of condensed spiritual energy. Representatives from every major sect sat in tiered seating, their combined cultivation auras making the air itself feel heavy.

At the center, Sect Master Hua Xinya of the Phoenix Flame Sect sat composed and elegant, showing no concern despite the accusations against her.

"This assembly is called to order," declared the Alliance Arbiter, a Nascent Soul cultivator who served as neutral mediator. "Azure Sky Sect has accused Phoenix Flame Sect of conspiracy to create demon realm breaches and incite war. Present your evidence."

Liang Qiu stood, projecting the memory jade recordings for all to see. The captured disciples' confessions. The spatial tears. The Phoenix Flame Sect formations.

Murmurs spread through the assembly. But Hua Xinya merely smiled.

"Impressive fabrications," she said calmly. "These formations could have been created by anyone with access to Phoenix Flame techniques. The 'confessions' were obtained under duress. And the disciples you captured? Rogue elements, expelled from our sect months ago."

"Lies," Kai said, standing despite Liang Qiu's warning look. "I was there. I saw your disciples actively maintaining those tears. I have evidence—"

"Evidence from a sixteen-year-old outer disciple?" Hua Xinya's laugh was dismissive. "The boy probably doesn't even understand what he saw."

The assembly murmured agreement. Kai was young, inexperienced in their eyes. His word carried little weight against a Sect Master.

But then Yuhan stood. "Then test us. Place us under truth compulsion and ask your questions. We'll answer honestly."

That got attention. Truth compulsion couldn't be fooled—it was ancient magic that forced honest answers.

The Arbiter considered. "That is... unusual. But acceptable. Do you both consent?"

"We do," Kai confirmed.

The formations were activated, complex arrays that glowed around them. Every cultivator present could feel the magic working—any lie would be immediately obvious.

"State your names and sects," the Arbiter commanded.

"Kai Shen, Azure Sky Sect, Sword Saint Peak."

"Feng Yuhan, Azure Sky Sect, Sword Saint Peak."

"Did you personally witness Phoenix Flame Sect disciples maintaining the spatial tears?"

"Yes."

"Were these disciples acting under official sect orders?"

"Yes. One explicitly mentioned Sect Master Hua's commands."

The assembly erupted in conversation. Hua Xinya's composure cracked slightly.

"The boy is mistaken—" she started.

"The truth compulsion confirms they're not lying," the Arbiter interrupted. "They believe what they're saying is true."

"Belief isn't fact. They could have been deceived, shown false evidence—"

"Then let us test you," Kai said boldly. "Submit to truth compulsion yourself, Sect Master Hua. Deny your involvement under oath."

The challenge hung in the air. Hua Xinya's face hardened.

"I am a Sect Master. I don't submit to interrogation by children."

"Because you can't," Yuhan pressed. "Because under truth compulsion, you'd have to admit everything."

The assembly was watching now, really watching. Hua Xinya's refusal to undergo the same test she'd dismissed as meaningless was telling.

"This assembly is a farce," Hua Xinya declared, standing. "I will not dignify these accusations with further response. Phoenix Flame Sect withdraws from these proceedings."

She left, her delegation following. But the damage was done. Her refusal to clear her name under truth compulsion had confirmed guilt in most observers' minds.

The Arbiter conferred with other senior cultivators. Finally, he announced: "The Cultivation Alliance finds reasonable evidence of Phoenix Flame Sect involvement in creating demon realm breaches. Economic sanctions will be imposed until a formal investigation concludes. All sects are advised to strengthen their borders and prepare for possible demon beast activity."

It wasn't a declaration of war, but it was close. The cultivation world was fracturing.

As they left the assembly, Liang Qiu placed hands on both their shoulders. "You did well. Speaking truth to power takes courage."

"It also made us targets," Kai said. "Hua Xinya won't forgive this humiliation."

"No, she won't. Which is why you're both staying at Sword Saint Peak under Master Jian's protection until things settle."

But Kai knew from experience—things wouldn't settle. They'd just escalated toward the Chaos Wars, now happening years early because of their interference.

Every action creates reactions. Every change cascades into more changes. Are we saving the future or just rearranging how it ends?

He didn't have an answer. But looking at Yuhan beside him, he knew they'd face whatever came together.

That had to be enough.
