Three months passed in intensive cultivation. Kai reached Foundation Establishment seventh level. Yuhan broke through to ninth level. Both were advancing impossibly fast, but Master Jian's training methods made the progress seem natural.
The cultivation world had changed dramatically. The Phoenix Flame Sect openly allied with three other major sects, forming a coalition that controlled nearly forty percent of the Eastern Continent's resources. The Azure Sky Sect led an opposing alliance of smaller sects.
War hadn't broken out yet, but everyone knew it was coming.
"You need to reach Core Formation," Master Jian told them during evening training. "Both of you. Foundation Establishment won't be enough for what's coming."
"We know," Kai said. "But Core Formation requires heavenly tribulation. We can't fake that. Everyone will know."
"Then don't fake it. Break through properly, weather the tribulation, accept your new status as geniuses. The sect needs powerful disciples right now."
He was right. The Azure Sky Sect was hemorrhaging members as neutral cultivators fled the coming conflict. Showing strength might rally support.
"There's a problem," Yuhan said. "Core Formation tribulation is dangerous. Even with our experience, there's real risk of failure."
"Then you'll do it together," Master Jian decided. "Dual cultivation breakthrough. Your void-aspect energies resonate—use that. Support each other through the tribulation."
Dual breakthrough was rare, requiring perfect synchronization. But Kai and Yuhan had been fighting in sync for lifetimes.
"When?" Kai asked.
"Tomorrow. At dawn. On Sword Saint Peak where I can monitor and intervene if needed."
That night, unable to sleep, Kai and Yuhan sat together under the stars.
"Nervous?" Yuhan asked.
"Terrified," Kai admitted. "In my previous life, my Core Formation tribulation nearly killed me. Took me three attempts to succeed."
"This time you have me."
"I know. That's the only reason I'm willing to try."
Yuhan took his hand. "Remember when you said attachments made you weak? That you avoided them to focus on cultivation?"
"I was wrong."
"Yes. Because here's what I've learned—cultivation isn't about becoming perfect and isolated. It's about becoming stronger so you can protect what matters." Yuhan met his eyes. "You matter to me. More than cultivation, more than power, more than anything."
Kai's throat tightened. "You matter to me too. In both lives, you've been... everything."
They kissed under the starlight, gentle and unhurried, a promise renewed.
When dawn came, they stood together at Sword Saint Peak's summit. Master Jian had set up protective formations, but the tribulation would be theirs to face.
"Ready?" Yuhan asked.
"Together," Kai replied.
They sat cross-legged, facing each other, hands clasped. Their void-aspect energies connected, forming a circuit between them.
Kai drew on his cultivation base, compressing it, refining it, transforming Foundation Establishment energy into something denser, more potent. Core Formation was more than just power—it was fundamental change in how spiritual energy
integrated with the physical body.
Beside him, Yuhan did the same. Their energies synchronized, supporting each other through the transformation.
The heavens noticed.
Dark clouds gathered with unnatural speed. Thunder rumbled. This was heavenly tribulation—the universe testing whether they were worthy of greater power.
The first lightning bolt struck.
Kai and Yuhan bore it together, void energy absorbing and dispersing the attack. It hurt, burned, but they held firm.
Second bolt. Third. Each one stronger than the last.
By the seventh bolt, Kai's body was smoking, his meridians screaming. But Yuhan's energy flowed into him, healing, supporting.
By the ninth bolt, Yuhan was faltering. Kai returned the favor, his void energy wrapping around Yuhan protectively.
The final bolt—the tenth—was massive, powerful enough to kill most cultivators.
They faced it together, void energies merging into a single shield.
The bolt struck. The world went white.
When consciousness returned, Kai was lying on the mountain, every nerve ending on fire. Beside him, Yuhan groaned.
"Did we...?" Yuhan started.
"Check your cultivation," Master Jian's voice said from somewhere nearby.
Kai turned his awareness inward. His dantian had transformed—no longer the small core of Foundation Establishment, but a genuine Core of spiritual energy, dense and powerful and stable.
Core Formation realm.
Beside him, Yuhan was smiling through the pain. "We did it."
"Together," Kai confirmed.
They'd reached Core Formation in less than a year from Foundation Establishment first level. In the cultivation world, that was unprecedented.
News would spread fast.
The war was coming closer.
But they were stronger now. Ready.
