[Special Abilities]: Healing Factor, Heat Vision. Logan looked at the newly added section: "New Ability?"
He hadn't expected that killing Conrad and eliminating a potential threat would unlock a new ability.
Heat Vision might sound useless, but it was one of Superman's superpowers. While his current heat vision certainly didn't reach Superman's exaggerated level, having a new ability meant having another means of self-defense.
At this moment, relying solely on his Healing Factor and the Adamantium claws in his hands wouldn't get him very far.
Besides, he might even awaken other abilities in the future.
Bang!
Gunfire from behind interrupted Logan's thoughts; bullets whistling almost grazed his ears.
"Damn it!" Logan cursed, sprinting toward the warehouse exit.
The chaotic shooting from the pursuing gunman completely shattered the jungle's tranquility, frightening countless birds.
Fortunately, the gunmen running weren't very accurate, and coupled with Logan's unpredictable escape route, the bullets always missed their target.
"James, over here!"
Suddenly, a blinding flash, followed by the roar of a speeding truck and Samuel's shouts, waving his arms, lit up the road. Logan jumped into the truck and slammed the door shut. Bullets whistled around them, hitting the door and even the windows, but thankfully the bulletproof glass did not shatter, leaving behind a dense network of cracks.
Samuel floored the accelerator, and the truck roared into motion, leaving the large group of gunmen behind.
"Get out of the city fast!" Logan shouted, panting in the passenger seat, urging him to leave.
It was late, with less traffic—the best time to leave the city. If they waited until dawn, commuter traffic would clog all the main roads, and then both the Juarez family and S.H.I.E.L.D. could easily catch up to them!
"But Conrad hasn't made it yet!" Samuel noticed that Conrad hadn't gotten in with Logan.
"He…" Logan sighed. "He was killed by the Juarez family."
"What!?" Samuel's face was filled with surprise, which then transformed into anger. "Damn it!"
He had done many dangerous missions with Conrad. Although the guy had a sharp temper, he was still a partner who had risked his life for him. Hearing the news of his death, Samuel felt an involuntary surge of anger.
Josh, in the back seat, also frowned, but he was relatively calm. He said in a grave voice: "Okay, let's get out of the city first. The cargo is important. We'll talk about revenge later!"
Samuel nodded and accelerated toward the New York border.
Shortly after Logan and his group left, a series of black vans burst in and immediately surrounded the Juarez logistics warehouse.
A group of heavily armed agents jumped out of the vehicles and searched the entire warehouse. Within minutes, they had captured the Juarez family.
"My God, was there a terrorist attack here?" Steve exclaimed. Inside the warehouse, Steve and Rumlow stared in astonishment at the bodies scattered on the floor.
While mass shootings are nothing new in the United States, an incident of this magnitude is unusual.
"It looks like they ran into a formidable adversary," Rumlow said, observing the corpses on the ground; most had been shot in the head or heart; the marksmanship was excellent.
Steve frowned as he walked down the corridor toward the center of the warehouse.
A group of heavily armed agents formed a circle, inside which the members of the Juarez family were disarmed, crouching on the ground with their heads in their hands.
"Have you captured everyone?" Steve asked Natasha, who was overseeing the arrest.
Natasha nodded. "Everyone in the warehouse is here. According to them, a group of people robbed this place." Steve's gaze swept over the group and he asked sharply, "Who is in charge here?"
The bearded man tremblingly lifted his head, averting his gaze from Steve.
"Where are the two boxes, BU-26 and BU-27?" Steve demanded.
"They were just stolen," the bearded man pointed to the corpses in the corridor upstairs. "They also killed several of our men."
"Damn it," Steve's face darkened. "If we had arrived earlier, Fury's entire intelligence department could have gone on vacation. It takes them three days to search one warehouse; their efficiency is even worse than a group of thieves!"
These guys have so many men and weapons, and they still couldn't stop just a few!
Rumlow, standing beside him, said coldly, "Quickly order all entrances and exits to New York to be monitored. That cargo cannot leave!"
Natasha shook her head, helpless. "It's too late. This is on the outskirts. By now, they've probably already left the city."
"The intelligence delay is Nick Fury's problem. Let him deal with the rest," Natasha said, pulling out a hard drive. "Here are the warehouse surveillance camera recordings."
"How do you use this?" Steve asked, holding the hard drive and looking at it awkwardly.
"There's a computer in the car. Let's watch it there."
Natasha noticed the embarrassment on Steve's face, took the hard drive, and led them to the car. There were surveillance cameras throughout the warehouse, but due to the darkness, the images were very blurry.
"They don't look very good; the technology department might have to process them."
Natasha stared intently at the monitor screen, frowning. "But judging by the number of people and their general appearance, they must be the ones from the port," she said.
Steve nodded, his gaze fixed on the blurry, aged face on the screen, lost in thought...
Meanwhile, Logan and his team sped down the highway outside New York, heading back to Texas.
Chris had already taken care of all the checkpoints along the way, ensuring their truck had a smooth journey. The highway was silent in the dark of night; Logan and his team's truck traveled alone in the gloom.
"Poor Conrad," Samuel sighed regretfully while driving. "He had a bad temper, but I never thought he would die like this, without even a proper burial."
Logan looked at Samuel, seeing that his regret was genuine.
"Did he have family?" Logan asked.
"Not that I know of. I've never seen him call or message family," Samuel sighed again.
Logan fell silent, then sighed helplessly.
Although Conrad's death was his fault, he had to feign remorse.
He saw Josh in the back seat looking at him through the rearview mirror.
This guy probably already suspects something about him…
After a few minutes of silence, Logan suddenly spoke: "Consider the money from this mission as the funeral expenses. Find him a priest."
Samuel nodded silently.
The journey passed without incident.
The three took turns driving, barely stopping, and finally arrived in Santa Fe the following afternoon, at the Lawrence family logistics warehouse.
Chris, who had heard the news, was already waiting at the warehouse entrance, eagerly watching as Logan and the others unloaded the cargo.
"Is everything here?" Chris enthusiastically tapped the box and motioned to Logan. "Open it!"
Logan used a crowbar to force open the three padlocks on the alleyway, opened the outer box, and found a silver iron case wrapped in a thin film inside.
He tore off the film, opened the latches, and lifted the lid.
What he found inside left him chilled.
A damaged laser pistol, completely incongruous with the luxurious silver case, had many dents and nicks in the barrel, as if it had just come out of a major battle.
"Not bad."
Chris didn't seem to mind the damage to the laser pistol at all; on the contrary, his eyes shone with admiration as he repeatedly praised it, unable to resist the temptation to pick it up.
The heavy laser pistol required him to lift it with both hands, and he caressed it.
At the same time, he noticed Logan's gaze fixed on the pistol, which made the previously enthusiastic Chris show a slight annoyance. "Alright, mission accomplished, everyone out. The money will be transferred to your accounts later."
"Understood."
Logan nodded, but his frown remained.
He recognized the weapon; it was a weapon abandoned by the Chitauri during the Battle of New York. Although somewhat worn, it must have been fully functional.
This was a product that far surpassed Earth technology, and its power probably exceeded that of any firearm on Earth.
Logan then understood why S.H.I.E.L.D. and Steve were at the port, competing for that cargo.
Clearly, they didn't want it circulating.
It seemed they couldn't allow the Lawrence family to keep it.
On the way back, Logan felt somewhat uneasy.
It now seemed that the Lawrence family's ambitions were greater than he had imagined. He needed to escape as soon as possible, or he could get caught up in an unnecessary war.
Lost in thought, Logan had a sudden inspiration.
That's right! Heat Vision!
He remembered his new ability. He had been in a hurry before and hadn't had time to delve into it.
It now seemed that the special reward mentioned when his new ability awakened was, indeed, granting him this new power.
In an instant, the worry on Logan's face lessened somewhat.
For him, this was undoubtedly excellent news.
After all, the Healing Factor and Adamantium claws were not enough to sustain his entire race.
