Chapter 17: The Long Year - Part 2

January brought frost that turned London's streets into glass and Adam Wright's first day as a Ministry clerk, clutching forged credentials and praying his false identity would survive bureaucratic scrutiny. Mrs. Penelope Yates examined his application with the skeptical eye of someone who'd seen too many unqualified candidates.

"Twelve years old," she muttered, adjusting her spectacles. "Homeschooled. No institutional references."

"My guardian believed in practical education," Adam replied, his voice steady despite the hammering of his heart. "I've been managing his affairs since his death."

Mrs. Yates studied him for a long moment. Half her staff had called in sick, terrified of the Chamber crisis spreading beyond Hogwarts. Desperation made people flexible about hiring standards.

"Trial period. One month. Filing and basic administration only."

"I'm in."

The Ministry's Atrium overwhelmed Adam's senses: golden fireplaces erupting with green flames, interdepartmental memos swooping like demented paper airplanes, the constant babble of wizards conducting the business of magical government. He followed Mrs. Yates through the maze, memorizing every detail with the obsessive focus of someone who knew information was survival.

The Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes occupied a cramped corner of Level Three, its filing cabinets stuffed with incident reports that chronicled the wizarding world's countless disasters. Adam's job was mundane—organizing paperwork, updating records, fetching tea for overwhelmed officials—but it provided access to intelligence beyond price.

Every report from Hogwarts crossed his desk. Petrifications documented in dry bureaucratic language that couldn't capture the terror of students frozen in magical stone. Ministry response protocols that prioritized political damage control over student safety. And conversations overheard in the department's cramped corridors that revealed the crisis's true dimensions.

"Dumbledore's losing control," one official whispered to another during a tea break. "Malfoy's pushing for his removal in the Wizengamot. If another student dies, they'll demand action."

Adam filed this intelligence away with cold precision. Lucius Malfoy was orchestrating a coup, using the crisis he'd created to destroy his enemies. The casual evil was breathtaking—sacrificing children to advance political ambitions, then positioning himself as the solution to problems he'd caused.

"They're all complicit. Every official who prioritizes politics over protection."

April brought rain that drummed against the Ministry's windows and a stack of incident reports that made Adam's blood freeze. Buried in the routine paperwork was a file marked "CONFIDENTIAL - HOGWARTS PETRIFICATION."

Hermione Granger. Petrified in the library, clutching a mirror fragment and a note reading "Pipes."

Adam's hands shook as he read the details. Hermione—brilliant, brave Hermione who he'd envied and respected from a distance—was frozen solid. But the note proved she'd figured it out before the attack: the basilisk traveled through the castle's plumbing. She'd saved herself with the mirror but couldn't warn others in time.

"She knows the truth but can't speak it. Just like me."

The kinship was painful and perfect. They were both trapped by circumstance, both possessed knowledge they couldn't share effectively. The difference was that Hermione was petrified while Adam remained free—and useless—outside the castle where he was needed most.

That night, Adam made his decision with the finality of someone choosing his own execution. Next year, no matter what it cost, he was getting into Hogwarts. Not as a visitor or merchant or Ministry observer, but as a student with the right to live in the castle where these crises unfolded.

He'd claim late enrollment due to his guardian's recent death, use every SP he possessed for convincing documentation, and force his way past whatever barriers remained. The alternative—watching another crisis unfold from the outside—was unacceptable.

[MISSION UPDATED: ENROLL AT HOGWARTS]

[DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 1, 1993]

[REWARD: 15,000 SP]

[WARNING: FAILURE RESULTS IN PERMANENT EDUCATIONAL EXCLUSION]

June arrived with news that vindicated Adam's determination and deepened his frustration in equal measure. The Daily Prophet's headlines screamed triumph: "HARRY POTTER SAVES HOGWARTS—Destroys Basilisk, Rescues Student!"

The public coverage was sensational but vague, focusing on heroic narrative while ignoring crucial details. But Adam's Ministry access provided the confidential report that revealed everything: Tom Riddle's diary destroyed, Ginny Weasley recovered from possession, basilisk slain by Potter with Gryffindor's sword, Fawkes the Phoenix providing crucial assistance.

"It's over. They survived. But I wasn't there when it mattered."

The relief was overwhelming—everyone he'd worried about had survived the crisis. But underneath the gratitude lurked bitter frustration. Another magical catastrophe had unfolded while he remained locked outside, powerless to help those who needed protection.

Never again.

Adam used his Ministry position to "acquire" one crucial item from the recovered basilisk remains: a fang fragment stored in Department of Mysteries holding. The System's "authentic retrieval" service cost 5,000 SP but made the theft completely undetectable—as far as official records showed, the fang had been properly disposed of through standard channels.

"Basilisk fangs destroy Horcruxes. I'll need it."

Insurance for future battles, when knowing the enemy's weaknesses would mean the difference between victory and disaster.

Summer brought Adam's resignation from the Ministry ("pursuing formal education") and intensive preparation for the most important interview of his life. His forged documents were perfect—System-enhanced to pass any scrutiny, complete with falsified magical aptitude tests and recommendation letters from fictional tutors.

[LEVEL UP! LEVEL 5 ACHIEVED]

[NEW STATS: HP 180, MP 400]

[MISSION COMPLETE: MINISTRY INFILTRATION - REWARD: 2,500 SP]

But power and wealth meant nothing if he couldn't reach Hogwarts. Adam's entire future balanced on a single application, a stack of forged papers, and his ability to convince the most perceptive witch in Britain that his fabricated identity was genuine.

On August fifteenth, Adam sealed his enrollment application and attached it to the leg of a hired owl. The parchment disappeared into the Scottish sky, carrying his hopes toward the castle that had rejected him once before.

Now he could only wait and prepare for whatever judgment awaited.
