Chapter 20: Final Preparations
Late August brought the bittersweet task of dismantling the life Adam had carefully constructed in magical London. His merchant stall sat empty, bearing a simple sign: "Temporarily Closed—Proprietor Attending School. Will Reopen During Holidays." The words felt surreal after two years of pretending to be older, more established, independent.
Five days until Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Five days to say goodbye to the people who had helped him survive when the magical world first rejected him.
Adam found Old Tom at their usual corner behind King's Cross, warming his hands over a barrel fire despite the late summer heat. The homeless veteran looked up as Adam approached, his weathered face creasing into something approaching pride.
"Knew you'd make it, kid," Tom said without preamble. "You're too stubborn to fail."
"I wanted to thank you," Adam said, his throat unexpectedly tight. "For the lessons. For the friendship. For not asking questions you knew I couldn't answer."
Tom waved away the gratitude with a gesture that somehow managed to be both dismissive and deeply moved. "You helped yourself, boy. I just pointed you in the right direction."
Adam had prepared for this moment, purchasing a battered duffel bag and filling it with clothes, a few personal items, and five hundred Galleons wrapped in newspaper at the bottom. He set it down casually beside Tom's usual sleeping spot.
"Left some things behind that I won't need at school," he said. "Might be useful to someone."
Tom would discover the money later, after Adam was gone. Enough to rent a room for a year if he chose, or to continue his street life in considerably more comfort. Either way, it was a debt Adam needed to pay.
Mrs. Chen sat on her usual park bench surrounded by London's pigeon army, distributing breadcrumbs with the patient dedication of someone who understood that small kindnesses mattered most. She looked up as Adam approached, her dark eyes immediately comprehending without need for explanation.
"You go now," she said in her careful English. "To school."
"Yes. Thank you for everything. For the food, for the kindness. For treating me like I mattered."
She pressed a container of dumplings into his hands along with a hug that made his chest ache with emotions he couldn't name. These people had helped him survive when the magical world offered nothing but rejection and erasure.
"Good boy," she whispered. "You remember kindness. You remember people who help. That make you good man."
Madam Adelphi visited his stall one final time, her elderly face bright with genuine pleasure at his success.
"I knew you'd go far, dear," she said, examining the empty space where his wares had been displayed. "Your guardian would be so proud."
"My fictional guardian who never existed."
The mention of Marcus Wright nearly shattered Adam's composure. She had no idea how much of his story was fabricated, but her belief in him felt genuine anyway. Her faith in the boy she thought he was carried more weight than any magical achievement.
"Thank you," he managed. "For being my first customer. For trusting me when no one else would."
"Trust goes both ways, Adam. You never cheated me, never sold me inferior goods. That's worth more than perfect credentials."
With his goodbyes complete, Adam turned to the System Shop for final preparations. His SP total had climbed to 7,300 points—enough for significant upgrades that might keep him alive in Dumbledore's proximity.
Silencio Level 2 - 1,000 SP would provide superior stealth capabilities for those moments when discretion meant survival. Confundo - 1,500 SP offered memory manipulation if someone came too close to the truth about his identity.
But it was the final purchase that made him hesitate: Legilimency Basic - 7,000 SP. Surface thought reading, the ability to skim emotional states and immediate intentions from unguarded minds. It was invasive, morally questionable, exactly the sort of violation that Dumbledore had inflicted on him.
"I swore I'd never become like him. But if reading someone's surface thoughts could save my life..."
Adam confirmed the purchase and immediately felt dirty. The knowledge that flooded his mind was clinical, precise, and fundamentally predatory. He now possessed the ability to rifle through the mental surface of anyone who couldn't defend themselves.
The remaining 800 SP went to practical necessities: a trunk with an extension charm for storage, quality quills and parchment, dress robes for formal occasions. When he examined his reflection in the shop window, a well-dressed fourteen-year-old wizard looked back—someone who belonged at Hogwarts, who had every right to be there.
The disguise was complete.
Adam's final morning in London brought one last pilgrimage to the park where his legendary pigeon war had begun. Bastard—the one pigeon who had never accepted any truce—perched on their traditional bench, beady eyes as judgmental as ever.
"We've had our battles," Adam said, settling beside the hostile bird. "You've stolen my food. I've hexed you with minor inconveniences. But I'm leaving now."
He tossed Bastard an entire bag of premium birdseed—twenty pounds worth of the expensive stuff that posh bird enthusiasts bought for their prized pets.
"Consider this a peace offering. Or a bribe. Or just me being sentimental about the stupidest rivalry in London."
Bastard pecked experimentally at the seeds, then looked up with what Adam chose to interpret as grudging approval. Of all the absurd elements of his transmigration—magic, systems, destiny—his war with London's pigeon population might have been the most ridiculous. And somehow, it had made this impossible world feel real.
As Adam walked away, Bastard cooed once. It almost sounded like farewell.
August thirty-first arrived with autumn's first whisper and Adam standing in his empty Knockturn Alley room, trunk packed, ready for whatever came next. Tomorrow he would board the Hogwarts Express. Tomorrow he would enter the castle he'd dreamed about for two years. Tomorrow he would sit at a House table, eat in the Great Hall, sleep in a dormitory with actual students.
Terror and excitement warred in his chest with equal intensity.
[QUEST ACTIVE: SURVIVE FIRST YEAR AT HOGWARTS]
[REWARD: 10,000 SP]
[WARNING: DUMBLEDORE IS WATCHING]
Adam grinned despite the ominous warning. Let Dumbledore watch. The helpless orphan who had been rejected at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters was gone. In his place stood someone with power, purpose, and the skills to protect both.
