Chapter 18: The Acceptance Letter
August twentieth brought sleepless nights and the kind of nervous energy that made Adam's hands shake whenever he tried to hold still. Five days of jumping at every sound outside his window, of checking his mail slot obsessively, of wondering if his application had been rejected without response.
Then, at dawn, came the soft tapping of claws against glass.
A tawny owl perched on his windowsill, amber eyes bright with intelligence, one leg extended to display a sealed envelope bearing the unmistakable Hogwarts crest. Adam's heart stopped, restarted, then began hammering against his ribs with bruising force.
"This is it. Everything depends on what's inside."
His hands trembled so violently he nearly dropped the envelope twice before managing to break the wax seal. The parchment inside was thick, expensive, bearing the formal letterhead of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
"Dear Mr. Wright,
We are pleased to accept your application for late enrollment at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However, given your unusual circumstances, you are required to appear for an assessment interview with Professor McGonagall on August 28th at 2:00 PM. Please bring all educational documentation for review.
Yours sincerely, Professor M. McGonagall Deputy Headmistress"
Adam read the letter three times, each word burning itself into his memory. He was in—conditionally. The interview was standard procedure for late admissions, but it meant direct scrutiny from someone who could expose his fabricated identity with a few pointed questions.
[MISSION UPDATE: PASS HOGWARTS INTERVIEW]
[REWARD: 5,000 SP]
[WARNING: FAILURE MEANS PERMANENT REJECTION]
The System's acknowledgment made the stakes terrifyingly clear. One conversation with Professor McGonagall would determine whether he finally reached Hogwarts or found himself permanently barred from the magical education he needed.
Eight days to prepare for interrogation by one of the most perceptive witches in Britain. Eight days to perfect a performance that would convince her his entire identity wasn't an elaborate lie.
Adam opened the System Shop with desperate focus, scanning for anything that might help him survive McGonagall's scrutiny. Advanced Occlumency - 6,000 SP caught his attention immediately—mental shields that could hide his true thoughts and memories from even skilled Legilimens.
The purchase confirmed, new knowledge flooded his mind: techniques for compartmentalizing thoughts, methods for presenting false memories while hiding genuine ones, the art of making lies feel like truth even to himself. It was advanced magic that most wizards never mastered, but the System's knowledge packets were perfect and complete.
"6,000 SP. Nearly everything I have."
But survival required additional preparation. Homeschool Education Standards - 1,000 SP provided detailed knowledge of how magical children were typically educated outside institutional settings. Curriculum expectations, testing methods, the sort of background information that would make his fictional guardian's teaching seem legitimate.
His SP total dropped to 300—barely enough for basic System functions, let alone emergency purchases. If the interview failed and he needed escape options, he'd have almost no resources. But the alternative was facing McGonagall completely unprepared.
"Marcus Wright, my guardian. Traveled extensively, studied obscure magic, died in a potion accident six months ago."
Adam rehearsed his backstory obsessively, practicing answers to every question McGonagall might ask. Where had his guardian traveled? What subjects had he emphasized? How had the accident occurred? Every detail had to be consistent, believable, impossible to verify through normal channels.
"You're going to Hogwarts, aren't you?"
Adam looked up from his preparation notes to find Madam Adelphi standing beside his stall, her weathered face bright with genuine pleasure.
"I hope so," he said carefully. "There's an interview first."
"My granddaughter attended for seven wonderful years. It's a magical place, truly." She patted his shoulder with grandmother's gentleness. "Don't be nervous, dear. Just be yourself."
"Being myself means immediate expulsion."
Adam managed a smile that felt like broken glass. "Thank you. That's very kind."
But her words echoed in his mind as she walked away. Just be yourself. If only it were that simple. If only "himself" wasn't a transmigrated soul with System powers, stolen memories, and an identity built on lies that could crumble under the first serious examination.
That evening, the System offered one final option: Perfect Composure Potion - 500 SP. One hour of complete emotional control, undetectable by any conventional means. The ability to lie with absolute conviction, to present false information without any telltale signs of deception.
Adam stared at his remaining 300 SP. He couldn't afford it. The purchase would leave him completely broke, with no emergency resources if something went wrong. But could he afford not to buy it? Could he trust his acting abilities alone against someone of McGonagall's experience?
"I'll have to rely on what I have. The Occlumency will have to be enough."
That night, Adam practiced his story in the mirror until his reflection looked convincing. "My guardian taught me everything. His death was tragic, but his legacy lives in my education. I'm ready to honor that legacy at Hogwarts."
The words sounded hollow even to him, but they would have to work.
August twenty-eighth arrived with autumn's first bite and Adam's future hanging in the balance. He dressed in his finest robes—purchased specifically for this moment—and organized his forged documents with obsessive care. Every piece of parchment had to be perfect, every detail above suspicion.
The Apparition to Hogsmeade cost precious MP but saved time he couldn't spare. Adam materialized on the village outskirts and walked toward the castle that dominated the Scottish landscape like a fairy tale made real.
Hogwarts rose before him in all its impossible glory: towers that scraped the sky, walls that had witnessed a thousand years of magic, windows that glowed with warm light against the afternoon shadows. This was where he belonged. This was where he needed to be.
"Success means Hogwarts. Failure means permanent exile."
Professor McGonagall waited inside, along with questions that could destroy everything he'd built. But Adam Wright—whoever he truly was—had survived too much to fail now.
The castle's gates opened at his approach, and Adam stepped through them toward his destiny.
