When the cookies cooled, and the kitchen finally looked less like a disaster movie, Josh sat on one of the stools with his little legs swinging, clutching another cookie like it was a treasure.
Cora had already given up on lecturing us and went to prepare Josh's things because his dad's assistant was supposed to pick him up soon.
Mr Knight stood near the counter, arms crossed, pretending not to keep glancing at Josh every two seconds to check if he was eating too fast or about to fall off the stool. He wasn't subtle. At all.
I washed the last mixing bowl, humming under my breath, and Josh hummed with me. It was cute. Warm. A little weird because Mr Knight looked like someone was personally torturing him with sunshine.
A soft ding came.
Josh perked up. "Daddy?"
Cora walked back in. "No, sweetheart. Your uncle will be picking you up today."
"Which uncle?"
"Uncle Dani."
Josh blinked. "I don't remember him."
Cora hesitated. "You were very young the last time he visited."
