Wednesday morning felt like the beginning of something monumental.
I barely slept, too anxious about what we'd find in that safe deposit box. What had Uncle Eduardo considered important enough to hide? Important enough to die for?
Kai looked equally exhausted when we gathered in the kitchen at 7 AM. Aunt Maria had made coffee and toast, but none of us could eat.
"Detective Park will be here in thirty minutes," she said, clutching her cup with trembling hands. "He's arranged for us to access the box before the bank opens to the public."
"Are you sure you want to come, Tía?" I asked. "You don't have to see whatever's in there."
"Eduardo was my brother-in-law. Your mother's brother. If he died protecting something, I need to know what it was."
Her voice was steady despite the emotion in her eyes. "I need to understand why my sister lost her brother. Why you lost your uncle."
Kai reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "Whatever we find, we'll face it together."
