"Remind me why I agreed to this?" Kai asked, straightening his collar for the third time in five minutes.
"Because you love me," I said, adjusting his tie. "And because Aunt Maria insisted."
"Your extended family is going to hate me."
"They're not going to hate you." I stepped back, admiring how good he looked in his button-down shirt and slacks. "They're going to interrogate you mercilessly, but they won't hate you."
"That's so much better."
It was Saturday evening, and Aunt Maria had organized a dinner with the extended Rodriguez family aunts, uncles, cousins I barely saw outside of holidays. The official reason was "getting to know Aria's boyfriend," but I suspected Aunt Maria had ulterior motives involving embarrassing baby stories and awkward questions about our future.
Maya emerged from the guest room wearing a navy blue dress Aunt Maria had bought her specifically for tonight. "Do I look okay?"
