Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Unearthing the Unwilling Dead

Stephnie knew that the demonic spirit could attack at any moment, so she always kept herself prepared. She had placed a cross on the table near the sofa—one soaked in holy water and blessed by the church. Stephnie immediately grabbed the cross and, commanding Cindy, said, "Whoever you are, come out of Cindy's body right now, or I will send you back to the flames of hell where your soul will be torn into a thousand pieces every single day."

But hearing Stephnie's threat, the spirit inside Cindy's body began laughing loudly. Looking straight at Stephnie, it said, "So many exorcists like you have tried giving me empty threats. Many of them went insane, and several I killed myself. I even killed one recently—the one who tried to keep Olivia away from me. And now that you're coming in my way, you will also have to die."

But in the very next moment, the spirit realized that Stephnie had already created a protective circle around the couch to trap it, and the demonic entity was already caught inside it. Realizing this, the spirit tried to leave Cindy's body and escape, but it couldn't. Meanwhile, Stephnie quickly picked up the Bible lying nearby. Holding the cross before the spirit, she began reading:

"In the name of Jesus Christ, I command every unclean spirit: depart from this place. The Lord rebuke you, and His light shatters all darkness. You have no authority here. Leave this body and flee, for God's power alone stands over you."

But there was one problem—banishing a spirit permanently from a body or place required calling out that spirit's real name, and Stephnie didn't know it. Meanwhile, Lily and Claire had been calling Stephnie for a long time to tell her what they had learned from Garcie, but Stephnie had left her phone vibrating in the kitchen, so she couldn't hear it.

After repeated commands from Stephnie, the spirit that had possessed Cindy suddenly left her body, and a calmness spread through the house. When Stephnie realized Cindy's body was free from any spirit, she rushed to her and sprinkled water on her face. "Cindy, are you okay?" she asked anxiously.

Cindy regained consciousness immediately, trembling with fear. She clung to Stephnie tightly and said in a shaken voice, "I saw everything that happened, Stephnie. The spirit trapped my soul inside my own body and took full control of it. I couldn't do anything. I'm so sorry."

"What happened wasn't done by you, Cindy, so you don't need to worry or apologize. I've removed the spirit from your body for now, and it won't be able to possess you again." Stephnie reassured her gently.

After that, the two sat there, waiting for Lily and Claire, who were only five minutes away from the house.

"Stephnie… Stephnie… where are you?" Claire called out in panic as she rushed into the house.

"Yes, Claire, I'm right here," Stephnie replied.

"Are you out of your mind? Lily and I have been calling you for so long—why weren't you picking up your phone?" Claire snapped at her, clearly frustrated.

Just then, Lily arrived from behind and added, "Stephnie, where is your phone? Throw it out if you're not going to answer it! And why is the house landline out of reach?"

"I'll tell you everything, but first both of you sit down calmly," Stephnie said, handing them water from the jar placed nearby.

After drinking the water, Claire and Lily settled down a bit. Then Claire said, "Do you know how worried we were when you didn't pick up your phone and even the house number wasn't connecting? We were terrified, thinking maybe that spirit might have hurt you or Cindy."

"Yes, that spirit did come, and it possessed Cindy again. But everything is fine now, and I've separated that spirit from her body permanently. But the work for which you two went to the prosecutor's office—did it get done?" Stephnie asked, looking at both Lily and Claire.

"Yes, Stephnie. We gave those pieces of evidence to the prosecutor, and he promised that as soon as the lab confirms the footage is genuine, he will pass the order to release Olivia," Lily replied, sitting down on the couch.

"Is Mommy coming back?" Alex suddenly appeared, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"Yes, Alex, your mom will be with you very soon," Claire assured him, letting him sit beside her.

Hearing Claire and Lily's words, happiness instantly lit up the children's faces.

"But did you meet that old woman who spoke to you at the library?" Stephnie asked Claire.

"Yes, Stephnie! And that old woman is Garcie Gunway," Claire answered with a cold sigh.

"But how did she become a sixty-year-old woman? She should have been thirty-one, right?" Stephnie asked in disbelief.

As soon as Stephnie said this, Claire began narrating everything that had happened at Garcie's house. With each detail Claire spoke, Stephnie's eyes widened more and more, and a cold wave ran through her entire body.

After hearing everything, Stephnie said, "Isn't it shocking? The Diana we believed to be a good woman turned out to be immoral—someone who ruined her husband's and her own daughter's lives just to revive her illicit lover."

Then Stephnie paused for a moment before continuing, "So this spirit is neither Robert's nor Nicolson's. It is the spirit of Diana's other illicit lover—'Mark'—a man who was deeply consumed by lust, and even after death, he stays here to physically abuse the women living in this family just to satisfy his desires."

"Yeah, you're right. But now that we know the spirit's name, will you be able to free it?" Lily asked Stephnie curiously.

"Look, Lily, only those spirits can be freed by an exorcist whose funeral has already taken place but, for some reason, couldn't move on to the afterlife. But Mark's body was buried in the backyard of this house, which means his last ritual was never performed. So first, we'll have to find Mark's remains, sprinkle holy water on them, and burn them. Only then will Mark's spirit be freed, and Cindy's family will be liberated from him," Stephnie explained.

"But we're exhausted right now, and I don't think any of us is ready to go digging in the backyard at this hour," Lily said, yawning.

"Yes, Lily! Besides, we can't search for Mark's remains today anyway, because I just performed a Bible ritual on him, and that must have angered the spirit even more. And while searching for his body, Alex and Cindy will have to stay outside the house. When a spirit watches its own body being burned, it cries in rage—and Mark's spirit could kill any one of us. So if Alex and Cindy are here, I might not be able to perform the rituals freely," Stephnie said, looking at everyone.

"Okay then. We'll do it tomorrow after Walter's funeral. And meanwhile, we'll drop Cindy and Alex off at their school teacher's house," Claire replied.

"But I still don't understand why Garcie wants the ashes of Mark's burned body," Stephnie said, thinking deeply.

"Whatever it is, we'll deal with it in the morning. For now, serve dinner. Today has been incredibly hectic," Lily said as she went to change her clothes, and Claire headed for a shower.

Stephnie and Cindy quickly prepared dinner, and everyone sat together to eat, knowing that the next day they had two major tasks ahead of them—finishing Walter's funeral and, later that night, driving Mark's spirit out of the house by burning his corpse buried in the backyard.

After dinner, everyone fell asleep together in the hall, close to one another, and they spent the night in peaceful rest.

The next morning, everyone got ready and left for the church, where Olivia had also arrived—brought by the police so she could see her husband one last time. When Olivia saw The Ghost Mentors team, she thanked Claire, Stephnie, and Lily for taking care of her children. Claire then informed Olivia that they had submitted evidence proving her innocence to the prosecutor's office, and very soon Olivia would be released from jail and reunited with her family.

Hearing Claire's words, tears filled Olivia's eyes. She didn't know how to thank The Ghost Mentors team, who had cared for her children like a family despite being strangers. But her tear-filled eyes said everything. Seeing their mother again, the children also grew emotional. In just a few days, their entire lives had changed. They had never imagined they would lose their father and then be separated from their mother as well.

But now, because of The Ghost Mentors team, a small hope had awakened in the hearts of those children. After the funeral was completed, the police took Olivia back with them, and Claire and Lily went to drop Cindy and Alex at their class teacher's house. Stephnie, meanwhile, was at the market, buying tools for digging and other essential items required for the ritual they had to perform that night. After dropping the kids off, Claire and Lily returned to Stephnie, and the three of them headed toward the house, fully prepared.

"Ghost Mentors!! This is the showtime. Today we show that spirit who the real boss is on this earth," Lily said, laughing and motivating her friends.

"Yes, today that spirit is done for. It has troubled all of us long enough, and it has tormented Cindy and her family too much," Claire added, supporting Lily.

Saying this, the three girls entered the house with all their equipment. But suddenly, someone called out from behind:

"Stephnie, Claire, Lily—I'm here too, to help you all," Cindy said cheerfully as she approached them.

"What are you doing here? I told you this situation can be very dangerous. It's not safe for you to be inside the house with us right now," Stephnie scolded her lightly.

"But I also want to take revenge for my dad's death from Mark's spirit," Cindy said, making an innocent face as she requested Stephnie to let her stay.

Hearing Cindy's words, Stephnie looked at Claire and Lily, and both of them insisted that Cindy should stay with them so she could also become strong and bold like the Ghost Mentors team.

"All right, fine. If that's what you all want. Cindy, do one thing—seal every door and window of this house with salt, and take the crosses from my bag and hang them on every wall of the house. Claire, you and Lily go to the backyard and start digging. I'll go perform my mantra-sadhna to create a sacred fire, with which we will burn Mark's remains," Stephnie instructed, assigning tasks to everyone.

Everyone followed Stephnie's instructions and got to work, while Stephnie began preparing for Mark's final ritual. This was the day The Ghost Mentors team was finally going to put an end to the most horrifying case they had ever handled.

Stephnie called everyone together and explained the plan one last time: as soon as Mark's body was found, Claire and Lily would sprinkle holy water on it. During that time, Cindy would stand inside a protective circle created by Stephnie. Then Stephnie would recite the final ritual prayer from the Bible and burn the body with the sacred fire. But if Mark's spirit tried to attack them during the ritual, everyone must immediately retreat into Cindy's protective circle, and at the right moment, they must still find a way to burn Mark's body.

The plan sounded quite easy, but everyone in that house knew it wasn't going to be that simple. Mark's spirit would do anything to stop them from burning his body, and if they failed to find his body and set it on fire during this final ritual, Mark's spirit would kill all of them.

Claire and Lily immediately went to the backyard and began digging, while Stephnie sat down to draw a large protective circle on the floor. Cindy was sealing every window and door with salt so the spirit couldn't escape the house. But suddenly, they heard heavy footsteps coming from the basement. Every breath in the house froze at the sound, but the next moment Stephnie looked at them and said, "Keep doing what I told you to do. That spirit can't come out of the basement because I've hung a consecrated cross on the basement door."

Hearing that, Claire and Lily resumed digging quickly, but even after quite some time, they still couldn't find Mark's body.

Then Cindy said that when they had shifted into this house, the broker had told them he had moved the backyard slightly toward the west side to build the power room on the east. Hearing this, Claire and Lily immediately began digging on the west side, and after digging for a while, they found a skeletal hand buried in the soil. It was probably Mark's body, which Claire and Lily had finally located. They instantly called out to Stephnie. Their call made Mark's spirit in the basement realize that The Ghost Mentors team had discovered his body, and the spirit began pounding the basement door violently.
