Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: A Night in a Haunted Mental Asylum

In the desolate streets of London—when ordinary people were returning home, or when the hidden spirits lurking inside someone's house were making the residents' lives miserable—there was one figure who moved silently through the darkness. Wrapped in a long black overcoat, this man destroyed those souls and sent them straight to Hell. He was none other than a Demon Slayer, sent to Earth by the Hell King, Lucifer. His name was Michael.

Along with Michael, a girl had also come to Earth. She was not only Michael's closest ally but also Lucifer's most trusted commander. Her name was Mercy. Yet her nature was the complete opposite of her name—there was no mercy in her at all. She showed no compassion toward the spirits; instead, she became utterly ruthless, slicing souls apart with the twin blades she carried, forged from the flames of Hell itself. After being cut by those infernal blades, the spirits could never go to Heaven or Hell again.

Lucifer had promised Michael that if he marked ten thousand souls and cast them into Hell's fire, then Michael's own soul would finally be freed from the hell. He would be allowed to enter the Afterlife, giving him the chance for reincarnation. For the past thousand years, Michael had served Lucifer tirelessly, paying for the sins of his previous life. London had nearly been cleansed of all wandering spirits under his watch.

Pleased with his dedication, Lucifer had granted Michael several powers—he could fly across the sky, change his form, and listen to the thoughts of any human. Along with these gifts, Michael also possessed a banishment spellbook, gifted to him by Poseidon, one of the greatest Greek gods.

"Mercy, how many souls do you think we've sent to Hell so far?" Michael asked Mercy, incinerating a soul with his powers.

"I have never counted, because I enjoy torturing these souls so much. Why, do you want to quit this job, Michael?" Mercy replied to Michael's question.

"Yes, I have been doing this work for the last 1000 years, and now I also want to go to the Afterlife, just like the souls of other normal people," Michael said, adjusting his overcoat.

"That's for later. Why don't we go to a cemetery? Today, I have a strong urge to cut and torture a soul with my Hell Blade," Mercy said with a mysterious smile.

"I don't know why you were given the name 'Mercy' in Hell; you are truly merciless," Michael said to Mercy, laughing.

Then, the two of them left from there towards an old cemetery where the spirit of a child had been harassing the people who came to the graveyard.

Meanwhile, at Cindy's house, everyone had partied and gone to sleep because the next day was very special for them, and Stephanie, Claire, and Lily also had to leave for their homes.

With the morning sun of the next day, Stephanie's eyes opened, and she woke everyone up as usual, telling them to take a quick shower and get ready.

"Stephanie, please let us sleep in peace today; we haven't had a full night's sleep for the past several days," Lily said, lying on the bed.

"Lily, wake up quickly, everyone is awake and taking a shower. But here you are, still on the bed. Olivia will also be returning home soon. We have to keep lunch ready at home, and then, after Olivia arrives, we too will leave from here for our homes," Stephanie said, pulling the sheet off Lily.

"Stephanie, I swear, when you become a mother, your children will not like you at all," Lily said, annoyed by Stephanie's actions, rubbing her eyes and getting out of bed.

The moment Lily stepped down from the bed, Stephanie suddenly screamed, "What the hell, Lily? Were you sleeping completely nude last night?"

Lily gave a seductive stretch and replied carelessly, "Yes, so what? When God has given such a beautiful body, one should show it off, shouldn't they? Look at my breasts and my nipples. How lovely they look," Lily teased Stephanie.

"You won't change," saying this, Stephanie went towards the kitchen and Lily went into the washroom to take a shower.

"Cindy, what's the plan for today? Since your Mom is coming, you tell me her favorite dish, and I will make that," Stephanie asked Cindy, who was styling Alex's hair.

"Mom loves Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup with it," Cindy replied with a smile.

"Fine, so today's menu is decided. And where is Claire?" Stephanie asked Cindy, looking around the house, not seeing Claire there.

"I don't know. When I came out after my shower, Claire was going out somewhere," Cindy replied, walking over to Stephanie in the kitchen.

Just then, Claire opened the main door of the house and came inside, saying, "Well, I thought having ice cream in the morning is a must, after all, we did such a great job."

Hearing Claire, everyone started laughing, and at that moment, Lily also arrived there. Everyone started making lunch together. Alex was also very happy today because he was going to meet his Mom after many days.

Around 12 noon, they finished making lunch and sat down in the hall, waiting for Olivia. Just then, the doorbell rang, and when Cindy opened the door, Olivia was standing there. Seeing their mother in front of them, Cindy and Alex hugged her, and Olivia also started crying, embracing her children.

Then, they all had lunch together, and then Cindy started telling her Mom about all the events that had happened in the past few days. Olivia had never seen both of her children so happy before today. Cindy just kept talking, and Olivia kept looking at her face, upon which the joy of the recent days was clearly visible.

Lily was sitting on the sofa beside them, uploading the footage of their case to her online channel. Meanwhile, Claire and Lily were sitting near Alex, playing with him. Soon, the clock struck three, and Claire, Stephnie, and Lily came out carrying their luggage, because it was time for them to return to their home in New York.

"For everything you all have done to help us, I can never repay this favor in my entire life. But if you ever need my help, please don't forget to remember me," Olivia said emotionally to the three girls.

"What are you saying? We also enjoyed spending time with your family, and Cindy is such a sweet girl. She's growing up now, but instead of getting lost in teenage mischief, she knows how to take care of her family like a responsible daughter. We're sad that we couldn't meet your husband Walter, but we hope that right now Walter's spirit is happily watching over you all from heaven," Claire said, hugging Olivia.

"Claire, you are truly very sweet, and I especially want to thank you, because Cindy told me how you stayed awake the whole night and ran around all day to solve this case and free my family from that spirit." As she spoke, Olivia looked at Claire with affection.

But Lily didn't like Olivia's behavior, because everyone had given their 100 percent in solving this case, yet Olivia was giving all the credit to Claire. Seeing this, Lily felt really bad and stepped outside.

"Before you all leave, I want to give you a gift—from both me and Walter—and you cannot refuse it," Olivia said, looking at Stephnie and Claire.

"We do all this to help people. We don't need any return gift," Stephnie said lovingly, trying to refuse.

But Olivia kept convincing them, and soon Cindy also joined in with her insistence, so Stephnie and Claire finally agreed to take the gift.

"This car is Walter's favorite car, and his dad gifted it to him. This is a 1961 Ford Mustang. From today, this is the official ride of 'The Ghost Mentors'." Saying this, Olivia placed her husband's car keys into Claire's hands.

"Oh! Walter had two cars?" Claire asked in surprise.

Because the car Claire and Lily used to go to Garcie's house was Olivia's family car, an old Honda Civic, while Walter only took the Mustang out for special occasions. He had parked the Mustang far away in a separate parking lot so the spirit wouldn't damage it, because Walter's emotions and cherished memories with his father were deeply connected to that car.

After that, Stephnie and Claire took Olivia's leave and stepped outside the house, where Lily was already waiting for them.

"I thought you two were planning to stay here even today," Lily said, pouting in anger.

"Olivia was talking to us, that's why we stayed a little longer. But why did you suddenly come outside?" Stephnie asked Lily.

"So what was I supposed to do standing there? We solved this case as a team, all of us risked our lives, and Olivia gave all the credit to Claire. Is that fair?" Lily said, walking down the road without even looking at them.

"Alright, fine. I apologize on Olivia's behalf. She wasn't there when we were fighting that spirit, so she must have misunderstood. Now come on, let go of your anger and give us a smile," Claire said, trying to cheer her up.

Lily gave a small smile to show that she was fine, but something inside her had shifted—feelings that would later bring big troubles into the lives of The Ghost Mentors. Anyway, the three girls picked up their luggage and continued walking down the road, and suddenly, at a turn, Stephnie and Claire stopped.

"What happened to you two now? Don't tell me you want to go back to Olivia's house, because I'm not going back there," Lily said, staring at Stephnie and Claire.

"Lily, we have to stop here," Stephnie replied with a smile.

"I think all that cooking has made your memory weak. The bus stop is still 1.5 kilometers away," Lily said while looking at a local map.

But the next moment, Claire walked straight into an underground parking lot without saying a word.

"Where is Claire going now? Did she forget to use the toilet before leaving the house? Or did her periods start?" Lily complained in irritation while watching Claire disappear, asking Stephnie in annoyance.

But Stephnie stood there calmly, smiling, and suddenly, from the other side, Claire drove up to Lily in a greyish-black Mustang and said, "Where are you going, beautiful? Want me to give you a lift?"

The moment Lily saw the Mustang, she started jumping in excitement and began showing off her sexy moves right there on the road. Seeing a high-school girl dance like that, a crowd gathered around them, and people began recording videos on their phones.

Seeing this, Stephnie quickly pulled Lily inside the car, and the three of them left for New York.

"Claire, where did you get this car?" Lily asked, checking out the interiors.

"This is Walter's car—the one he used to drive only on special occasions. Olivia gifted it to us," Claire said happily.

"Oh my god! I cannot tell you how happy I am! This is a 1961 Ford Mustang—one of the best classic cars of all time. I can't believe Olivia gifted this to us!" Lily said, expressing her excitement.

"Whatever it is, this case was different and more dangerous than the others," Stephnie, who had been sitting quietly for a long time, suddenly said.

"Yeah, you're right. But we learned a lot, and we also made a good friend like Cindy," Claire replied to Stephnie.

"Maybe in the future, Cindy might even join us," Lily said with a laugh.

Hearing Lily, all three girls began laughing, turned on the car's music, and started dancing to the song as they continued driving toward home.

But meanwhile, somewhere in New York, a group of five high school students was livestreaming inside an abandoned building. There were two boys and three girls in the group—their names were Jennifer, Christopher, Sarah, Adam, and Amily. They also ran an online blogging channel, and recently they had participated in an online competition where they had to create and post a video with content so unique that it would instantly reach one million views. The prize money for this competition was ten million dollars, and to win it, they planned to create a horror video and upload it to the internet. For that purpose, they had come to an old abandoned hospital building—where, fifty years ago, there used to be a mental asylum for treating mentally ill patients. But one day, a fire broke out in the hospital, and along with the patients, all the doctors burned to death. After that, paranormal incidents began occurring in the hospital, and people started believing it was haunted. Eventually, the building was abandoned and left to decay.

In this group, Jennifer was a cheerleader who Christopher had a one-sided love for. Christopher was a basketball player who was quite popular in their high school. Meanwhile, Sarah, the class monitor, studied in the same class as everyone else—and she had a one-sided love for Christopher. So there was a love triangle between them. On the other hand, Adam was a spoiled rich kid who had physical relations with his own class teacher. Separate from all of them, Amily was the daughter of a single mother, and she hid her poor background from her friends and pretended to be rich just to be a part of the group. The plan to make this video was entirely Adam's idea, and he had brought all the necessary equipment.

"Adam, are you sure this building really has spirits?" Christopher asked him.

"Yeah, man. Why are you asking so many questions? Before coming here, I did a lot of research about this place, and I found out that when the fire happened fifty years ago, everyone died here—and ever since then, the spirits of those dead people roam this place," Adam replied carelessly.

"So after that fire accident… how many people have died here till now, Adam?" Sarah asked nervously.

"Look, Sarah, if you're scared, you can go back right now. But after that, you won't get a single penny from the prize money. You really are such a coward," Adam mocked her.

Then the five of them went inside the hospital and climbed to the second floor to start checking the area. Jennifer was walking at the very back, with Sarah and Christopher ahead of her, while Adam and Amily led at the front. Suddenly, Jennifer felt as if something had rushed past her from behind at high speed. But when she turned around, she saw no one there. She thought that if she told her friends, they would make fun of her for being scared, so Jennifer didn't mention anything to them.

"Adam, but those spirits aren't humans or servants that we ring a bell and they instantly come running to us," Christopher said as they continued walking.

"You're right, my friend. That's why I brought a Ouija board—so that we can easily call those spirits and even send them back afterward," Adam replied.

"Oh, come on, these are just things people say. Ouija boards don't work. When I was a kid, I used to play with a Ouija board a lot with my sister and we tried calling spirits, but we never saw anything," Sarah said after hearing Adam.

"No problem, I've planned for that too. If no real spirit shows up when we call them, then one of us will act like a spirit has possessed them, and we'll record the video. People won't know whether a ghost came for real or not," Adam said and burst out laughing loudly.

But the very next moment, Adam let out a scream when he saw a black human-shaped shadow standing in front of him about 300 meters away.

Seeing the black shadow, Jennifer started making fun of Adam and then signaled for the shadow to come closer.

"This is my boyfriend Robin, who just returned from Los Angeles today. He's studying film direction there, so I asked him to join us," she said. Seeing Robin there, everyone was happy—except Christopher, who was furious that Jennifer already had a boyfriend. Sarah saw the anger on Christopher's face and understood everything.

Robin was a very mature and good guy. He was the only child of the business partner of Jennifer's father, and he had loved Jennifer since childhood. But Jennifer loved Robin only for his looks and money.

"So guys! What will be the title of the video we're going to make?" Robin asked them.

And immediately Sarah said, "A Night in a Haunted Mental Asylum."

None of them had any idea what was going to happen next, because they failed to notice that on the ceiling above their floor, the spirit of a girl dressed in white was staring down at them with her red glowing eyes.
