Chapter 28: Lynn: Seriously, Tempting Me Isn't Going to Work
To be honest, Lynn had never tried wine that cost over a hundred thousand dollars.
He opened it and poured it into a decanter. While it was breathing, Natasha went into the kitchen to make dinner.
Before long, the wine was ready, and Natasha's dinner was on the table.
"Yo, not bad."
Lynn commented as Natasha brought out one dish after another.
"Of course. Agents have to learn more than just how to get intel or take out enemies. We have to learn life skills, too. It helps with blending in."
She poured Lynn and Steve each a glass of the red wine.
Natasha raised her glass. "Well, to our preliminary victory. Cheers."
The three of them clinked glasses. Lynn was about to take a sip, but then asked, "Wait, what 'preliminary victory'?"
Natasha shrugged. "The Skrull's confession, of course. Even if Earth is being targeted by Skrulls, at least we know who the enemy is."
"So, doesn't that count?"
Hearing her, Lynn leaned back and looked at Steve. "So this is the Avenger's style? Wow, I gotta say, you superheroes have a great attitude."
"What else can we do?"
Steve, cutting his steak, shrugged. "Instead of worrying about things that haven't happened, we should just focus on what's in front of us."
"An enemy you can see isn't scary. The ones you can't see are the real threat."
Lynn nodded and raised his glass to them. "Just so we're clear: this Skrull thing has nothing to do with me. Don't try to drag me into it."
"By the way, you can still buy special potions from me. As long as you have the money, it's not a problem."
With that, Lynn took a sip.
The flavor exploded on his tongue. The next second, he frowned. "This is hundred-thousand-dollar wine? Honestly, the beer from the supermarket is better."
Hearing this, Steve also took a sip.
"What do you think?" Natasha asked, watching him.
"They just... have different flavors."
Steve's answer was diplomatic, but Natasha heard the subtext.
After all, comparing a hundred-thousand-dollar wine to a can of supermarket beer... that said it all.
"You two... you're really…"
Natasha shook her head, savoring the wine, and nodded in satisfaction.
Seeing that the two men were just eating and not drinking, she suggested, "Should I have someone send over some beer?"
"Forget it."
Lynn shook his head. "I have things to do later."
"Going to hunt vampires?"
Natasha asked curiously, "How did you find out about them?"
"Mainly some missing girls. I heard on the black market a while ago that someone was abducting them. I looked into it and found out these poor girls were being kept as blood slaves by vampires."
Okay, the excuse was a total lie, but it was plausible.
Hearing this, Steve frowned and looked at Natasha. "Didn'T Nick Fury say SHIELD drove all the vampires to Europe? Why are there still vampires in New York?"
"Who knows?"
Natasha shrugged. "Maybe SHIELD missed some. If these guys hide, they're hard to find."
She then looked at Lynn. "Lynn, you talk a big game about hating trouble and just wanting to enjoy life... but you still have a good and righteous heart."
"At least... you're willing to face vampires for those innocent girls."
Steve also looked at Lynn with approval.
"Hey, you two, don't try to butter me up. I grew out of that kind of flattery when I was a kid."
Lynn shut down their little mind games and went back to his food.

Evening.
"Are you two sure you want to come with me?"
Lynn looked at his two helpers, not minding at all.
In fact, with his current abilities, taking on a whole nest of vampires was... a bit of a stretch.
His only real advantage was his immortality, which meant he could be reckless.
To that end, Lynn had even brought some silver bombs.
'If I'm outmatched,' he figured, 'we'll just all go down together.'
'I'll resurrect. But I doubt a bunch of hundred-year-old vampires will resurrect from a silver bomb.'
But having Steve and Natasha along saved him a lot of trouble.
Click.
Natasha, now loaded with SHIELD-issued silver bullets and professional anti-vampire gear, flipped her auburn hair. "What, are you the only one allowed to be righteous? Are we Avengers just cowards?"
Lynn just shrugged.
He gripped his silver-loaded pistol and began moving toward the mansion, fast and low.
Seeing Lynn's movements, Natasha whispered to Steve, "See? I told you he wasn't as simple as he looked."
"Look at that... just his infiltration technique. That's not normal NYPD. Most agents can't even move like that."
Steve, following behind her, whispered back, "I'm not interested in prying into Lynn's secrets. I just know he's my friend."
"And I like his personality. He reminds me a bit of Howard... back in the day."
"Fine, but never say that to Tony. I guarantee he'd flip out."
The three of them avoided the cameras, using the blind spots to sneak into the estate.
Reaching a window on the ground floor, Natasha pulled a palm-sized micro-computer from her suit.
"I'm in their network. Hacking the surveillance now. Give me two minutes."
Hearing this, Lynn suddenly asked, "Where did you pull that from?"
He looked Natasha up and down. Her catsuit didn't exactly have pockets.
At his question, Natasha paused, then looked up at him, a glint in her eyes. "Curious where I hide my things, little boy?"
"Want me to show you?"
Looking at Natasha's seductive, playful smile, Lynn rubbed his nose. "I think I'll pass."
'Yeah. Lynn Hall doesn't touch women he's not supposed to touch.'
The woman standing in front of him wasn't called Black Widow for nothing. He knew his limits.
