"What were you thinking?" Otis said.
"I thought you were a very faithful/loyal girl."
Mei bit her straw lightly. Otis calling her loyal didn't seem entirely wrong. There were a lot of things she couldn't bear to throw away even letters from friends dating back to elementary school were carefully kept, sealed in a little box. And the gifts Otis had given her, big or small, she kept them all, just tucking them away together with the memories.
Mei looked at Otis. "But actually, the one who broke his promise was you, not me."
Otis made a soft, "Mm." "It was my fault."
Mei looked at him and felt a little sad for some reason. What do you mean it was your fault, ugh, gross, why does this feeling bug me? She fell silent and kept scooping rice. Otis lowered his head too, his spoon mixing rice with the tamagoyaki-like rolled egg as he shook it gently.
"So you broke up with me because of that?" Otis asked.
"Mm." Mei answered. "Almost."
"Almost what?" Otis pressed.
