Selina went to her bed. She was too tired after everything happened today. Being a paranormal investigator really didn't give much wealth to wiggle around. Maybe she had to find a real job soon and forgot everything about this.
Selina touched on the tattoo of her chest. She still didn't understand why her mother gave her this tattoo at such a young age. It had ruined her life and invited all sorts of wrong people.
But Selina knew her mother must have done it for a reason.
She lay in bed with tears in her eyes. Everything just became a little bit too much to bear. The world. The society. Her future.
Mater climbed on the bed and placed a paw on her face.
"Stay strong, woman. You can't let this world crush you."
The cat meowed.
Selina pulled him into her chest and hugged him tightly. She sobbed quietly.
Mater's eyes were wide open as his small body was completely buried into her chest. His dignity was defiled once again. But he had a soft spot for pretty women. She smelled very nice also so he didn't hate it.
Mater comforted Selina with his soft body as she fell into her sleep.
Once she was deep in slumber. Mater wriggled out of her arms.
"Pretty little thing. Everything is a bit harsh for you, huh?"
Mater stroked her head with his paw one last time before jumping down from the bed. He still needed to finish what he came here for.
The book.
Mater returned to the living room where the book was still laying on the table. He jumped on the table and opened it up.
Now that he understood the language of this world, he was finally able to read the content of the book.
It was as he suspected. The book was a diary.
"May 2nd, 2025.
I heard that voice again. A young woman wailing in the night. She beckoned to me."
"June 5th, 2025.
People didn't believe me when I said my house was haunted. She tortured me every night. Appearing in the places I least expected to scare me."
"July 19th, 2025.
It isn't just in my home anymore. I can see those things everywhere. They roam the streets but no one can see them.
I'm going crazy…"
"August 31st, 2025.
KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL ME KILL KILL KILL KILL"
"This is a Book of Fear." Mater said. "That Wraith has completely broken his mind, the owner of this book. These papers are drenched with terror and dread.
As for the content… I've never used this kind of book as a Grimoire. I wonder what kind of original spell I would get?"
The Dark Grimoire had three original spells and one passive ability after creation.
The content decided the original spells while the history of the book decided its passive ability.
The spells were less important than the passive as a Warlock could remove, rewrite, or overwrite the spells. The passive ability, however, stayed with the Grimoire forever.
The Book of Rage usually provided an offensive passive ability.
The Book of Despair usually provided an utility passive ability.
As for the Book of Fear, its passive ability was usually leaning to control, manipulation, or disabling effect. The kind that would manifest only out of fear.
"Well. No point in thinking too much now. I need to convert it quickly to use Chaos Eyes."
Mater sat on his butt and raised his pawn. His heart lit up bright red underneath his fur. Lines of Chaos reached out from his heart and climbed to his fluffy paws.
Dark red Chaos leaked out of his pores and enveloped the diary.
It formed a small vortex around the book, infusing it with Chaos and Mater's mark of ownership.
The book itself also had a little bit of Chaos inside it. That would heighten the quality of the Dark Grimoire once it was completed.
Tiny miniature red lightning appeared on the pages.
At the same time, the clouds above the city of Aeliz moved and formed a circle. Lightning struck chaotically as to welcome an oppressing force no one was ready to welcome.
In the Aeliz City Police Department. Detective Alister Baltimore snapped his head up and looked at the sky. He was still holding a cigarette in his hands.
"Call the DSI, Cole. Let them check if any new NCE is influencing the weather." Alister said.
"What should I say to them, boss? General check or…" Cole said.
"Just tell them to scan for any big NES activity."
"Roger that!"
DSI, the Department of Supernatural Interference. NCE, Non-Corporeal Entity. And NES, Negative Emotional Spectrum.
The DSI was the federal department funded by the government to deal with all supernatural issues. Their primary targets were the NCEs, a fancy word for ghost and haunted spirits.
NCEs were mostly similar to the Wraiths that Mater knew so well. They operated on the same level and fueled by the same energy, the Negative Emotional Spectrum.
Hate, disgust, rage, lust, laziness, etc. All negative emotions could be fed by the Wraiths to strengthen themselves. The government of this world called these emotions, NES, to categorize the possible appearance of Non-Corporeal Entities.
While the ACPD and DSI were busy finding out the cause of this bizarre weather, Mater had come close to creating his Dark Grimoire.
The book floated up in the air. The letters on the pages removed themselves and danced around in the air. Dark red lightning leaked out of the corners of Mater's eyes.
Then, those letters fused themselves back together and returned to the first three pages of the book. The vortex of Chaos went inside the cover of the book, changing its appearance from the inside out.
"It is done."
Mater returned to his four-legged position and the Dark Grimoire landed gently on the table. It had completely transformed and was almost unrecognizable.
The front of the book had the face of a man opening his mouth wide like he was screaming. Two dark red crystals were engraved in his eyes.
"Not too bad. Not too bad. Let me see what your passive ability is."
Mater placed his paw on the Dark Grimoire. Immediately, the crystals on the book lit up. Mater's golden eyes also changed to red.
"The book's passive ability is…"
