The next day Togata wakes up exhausted and heads to breakfast, he sits at a table with dozens of other kids. ''Good Morning Togata''. Sister Iris smiles. ''Hope you slept well?''. She continues.
''Yes miss''. Togata says a bit distracted staring at the other kids. Sister Iris notices and smiles. ''Hope you didn't think you were the only one here? Everyone was out on a field trip yesterday''. She says.
''Hmm competition it seems! You must prove your worth eat up boy you're being rude!!''. Tick says in his head. Togata tries to wake himself up and rushes to finish his food before everyone else. ''Woah calm down Togata there's enough for everyone''. Sister Sumire says.
''Not like that! You're eating like a barbarian use your etiquette!''. Tick shouts from inside his head. ''You haven't taught me any''. Togata replies sarcastically. ''HMMM! This is going to be the longest 10 years of my life''. Tick says.
''Alright kids head to class''. Sister Iris says. ''Follow the crowd boy, walk straight! chest up, shoulders back!''. Tick shouts. Togata pops out his chest trying to follow the instructions. ''What is wrong with this boy??''. Sister Sumire asks herself.
''Everyone take your seats''. Another Sister says as they enter the class. While teaching Togata begins to fall asleep. ''Awake! Still thyself boy!!''. Tick shouts. Togata jolts awake. ''I see someone stayed up playing all night, couldn't be bothered to get some sleep Togata is it?''. The sister asks.
The whole class begins to laugh. Togata puts his face to the desk in embarrassment. ''Dammit boy, you've made yourself a laughing stock!! Stay awake!''. Tick says. ''How can I when we stayed up all night practicing my posture''. Togata mutters to himself. A few of his classmates start to notice.
After barely staying awake in his classes Togata heads back to his room and plops on his bed. Tick rematerializes in the room. ''Now that Morning lectures have concluded it's time to study!''. Tick says already bringing out his books.
''I wanna sleep Mr tick''. Togata complains. Tick picks him up and puts him on the chair at his desk. ''No boy, if we want any chance of furthering out plans you must get a scholarship to a prestigious school! That is phase 2, now study!". Tick says. Someone knocks at the door. ''Togata?''. Sister Iris asks from outside. ''Come in miss''. Togata replies. As Tick dematerializes.
''Togata you're studying? everyone's outside playing go join them''. She says. ''NO! don't even think about it boy, you must study, you are different from those children''. Tick says. ''No miss I'm fine I need to study''. Togata replies reluctantly.
''Ok.. Togata no need to be shy take care, if you need anything ask ok?''. Sister Iris replies. Togata nods. When she leaves Tick immediately materializes. ''Alright first social studies get out your textbook''. Tick says. Togata rests his head on the table ''Can you read it to me? I'm tired''. Togata replies. ''Uhhgg, fine boy Listen closely!''. Tick holds the book and starts levitating around the room reading it to him. But Togata immediately falls asleep.
''Boy wake up!''. Tick shouts. Togata jolts awake. ''Fine just go to sleep we can continue tomorrow''. Tick says reluctantly. ''Thank you Mr Tick''. Togata replies as he heads to his bed. Tick starts to floar away. ''Where are you going Mr Tick?''. Togata asks. ''Ghostly things my boy, you must not meddle, get some rest''. Tick replies.
Togata tries to fall asleep but has nightmares about the day his parents died he jolts awake in the middle of the night. ''Is everything ok boy?''. Tick asks as he must have returned. ''I'm fine''. Togata replies. ''Hmm alright''. Tick says.
''Two months have gone by and I haven't been able to learn a thing, I haven't been able to focus or sleep. Worst of all I failed my promotion exams''. Togata says to himself as he stares at his results.
''There's clearly something wrong with him Iris, he is struggling! He sleeps during classes, doesn't leave his room and talks to himself when he thinks no one's watching, none of the kids want to play with him! We need to take him to professionals! It's obviously the loss of his parents. Sister Sumire whispers to Iris.
Sister Iris sighs. ''Maybe you're right''.
''How could you fail boy!? We studied every night, I taught you everything I know and still you somehow managed to fail, do you hear them their going to kick you out!''. Tick shouts.
Togata starts to cry. ''Togata don't worry everything will be fine''. Sister Iris says trying to comfort him.
''Leave me alone!''. Togata says as he rushes to his room and locks the door. Sister Sumire sighs. ''I don't understand that boy''. She says.
Tick immediately rematerializes. ''Oh, you've done it now child, you made a scene, now their surely going to kick you out!''. Tick says pacing around the room as Togata continues sobbing.
''Crying won't fix anything, are you daft boy? I've done all I can and still you're failing, It seems our plan is not going to work. Release me now! I've wasted my time with you''. Tick shouts.
''Please don't leave me!''. Togata cries. ''Eh hemmm!''. Tick clears his throat. ''Calm down boy, I didn't mean it''.
''I'm sorry! I couldn't sleep, maybe I'm not cut out for this''. Togata sobs. Tick suddenly gets uncomfortable.
''There there boy...''. He sighs. ''I guess I pushed you too hard, you are 5 years old after all, Many children your age wouldn't have come this far, but here we are''. Tick says as he sits next to him. But Togata doesn't stop crying. ''I won't leave you boy, at least not yet''. Tick sighs.
''You won't?''. Togata asks. ''No, follow me, I need to show you something''. Tick says stretching out a hand. Togata takes it and Tick flies the 2 outside and takes them to a cemetery. ''Where are we?''. Togata asks.
''Take a look, you can read correct?''. Tick asks as he places them near 2 graves side by side. ''Here... Lies.... Tom.''. Togata struggles, but he understands. ''This is where they were buried boy, here they are.. The reason we're doing all of this correct?''. Tick says.
''Would they want you to give up so easily?''. Tick asks. Togata nods no. ''So tell me do you want to make them proud boy?''. Tick asks again. Togata nods yes. ''Well then there we have it, you know there's an old wives tale, that the spirits of the dead follow loved ones, I personally don't believe it but, I feel their listening and telling you to go on''. Tick says.
''How do you know?''. Togata asks. ''Well boy take it from a dead man won't you?''. Tick says proudly. ''I want to.. make them proud, I'm sorry Mr Tick I'll try harder''. Togata says.
''Here, I took them when I went out before''. Tick says handing Togata a box. On the Box is inscribed TT. When he opens the box he sees glasses, although one of the lens is cracked. ''Sorry about that boy, it seemed to have happened when he was trying to protect you, plus they match your initials do they not? ''. Tick says.
''I'm sure he would want you to have it, c'mon now put them on. You're not fooling anyone, I know your blind as a bat without them. Tick teases. ''I almost forgot you wore glasses before did you not? I saw them in your memories, they must have broken during the altercation''. Tick continues.
Togata puts them on slowly. And suddenly a wind blows. ''Well I'll be boy, they say old wives carry wisdom but who would have guessed''. Tick says. Togata smiles and wipes away his tears. ''Well then, are you ready boy?''. Tick asks.
Togata nods yes. ''Let's go Mr Tick''. Togata replies. ''One more thing boy, here's a lesson for you, it's common courtesy to leave flowers for the dearly departed remember that''. Tick says placing some flowers unto their graves. ''And you said something about nightmares huh? Don't worry about it I believe I have a solution''. Tick says as he carries Togata back to his room.
''Now get some rest boy''. Tick says. ''But the''. Togata says. ''No worries just trust me as you have before, I'll be right here''. Tick says as Togata begins to sleep.
Inside his dreams we see the same creature attacking them and murdering Togata's parents, Suddenly Tick appears. ''How dare you foul creature?! You are harassing one of the greatest minds the future has to offer! Isn't he now Togata?''. Tick asks. Togata just watches. ''Well then pull out your laser!!''. Tick shouts. ''Laser?''. Togata asks suddenly a laser appears in his hands. Togata smiles.
''Ready!? Aim! Fire!''. Tick shouts as the 2 blast the alien''. Meanwhile outside Togata's dreams we see him smiling.
