Chapter 9 - A Mutant Little Sister’s Troublesome Powers

The faculty office of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was, in truth, just a guest room on the second floor of the Xavier Mansion. After Professor Charles remodeled it, it became an office. At the moment, the only one inside was Ororo.

She sat alone at her desk, grading papers. Her repeatedly furrowed brow made it clear that if these were exam scores, a good number of students were in serious trouble.

Seeing Ororo's displeased expression, Zhou Yi quietly walked up behind her, wrapped an arm around her waist, and murmured,"If those kids find out you gave them a pile of D's, I bet half the school will be calling you the wicked old witch again."

"Yi." Ororo sighed helplessly. "You should know—your sister is always one of the first to say that."

"Wow, then I guess Charrice really is my sister. Neither of us can make peace with math." Zhou Yi shrugged, then gently turned Ororo's chair toward him.

She wore a qipao embroidered with blue-and-white porcelain motifs, the snowy fabric and subtle blue patterns setting off her graceful figure and smooth, dark skin like a black pearl. Add her alluring features and rare silver hair, and the sight was enough to steal anyone's breath.

"Absolutely stunning," he said, without a hint of restraint.

Ororo pressed her lips together in a pleased smile. She shifted slightly, letting a long, shapely leg show through the slit of the dress. The curve continued down to a delicate ankle and a pair of elegant white heels—altogether radiating a refined, dignified beauty.

Seeing the admiration in Zhou Yi's eyes, Ororo chuckled."So? Realizing Mr. Zhou Yi's taste is impeccable?"

"Of course." Zhou Yi straightened his tie, putting on a very proud expression. "Mr. Zhou Yi has the best taste in the world—especially when it comes to appreciating beautiful women. Ororo, you're so beautiful even these flowers barely do you justice."

Ororo lifted the roses happily. After a moment of thought, she asked, "Just for me this time?"

"Come on, Ororo. It's always been just you, okay?" he answered cleanly, like a practiced line—which earned him a white-eyed stare from Ororo. She set the flowers behind her on the desk and said:

"Let's handle business first."

"No problem. I also prefer to discuss personal matters tonight." Zhou Yi grinned.

"We'll see about that," Ororo replied casually, then tossed him a stack of papers.

Zhou Yi flipped through them. They were report cards—mostly D's, with a few C's. All signed by Charrice Ferguson.

"What's this? End-of-year awards?" Zhou Yi massaged his temples as he scanned them. "Not bad… third-place and fourth-place awards everywhere."

"Yes, too bad there's no first place." Ororo punctured his self-comfort instantly. "And these are the small problems. I wasn't even going to show them to you, but they're the lead-in."

"Well, the overture's great," Zhou Yi rolled his eyes. "At least I can accept half of her mistakes."

Ororo sighed and said, seriously,"Your mindset is good—but this time, the mistake Charrice made is more serious."

"Tell me." Zhou Yi's expression became solemn. His sister was his soft spot—one of the people he cared about most in this world. He couldn't take anything about her lightly.

"Charrice's ability is unique, as you know. She can open two-way portals anywhere in three-dimensional space. For her, there's almost nowhere she can't reach. The teachers all agree this ability is rare and dangerous. Especially because she's too casual with it."

"Two months ago, she and two students used her powers to sneak off campus at night. She accidentally transported a drunk man to the Brooklyn Bridge, then kept dropping him through two portals—five minutes of constant falling. After being rescued, the poor guy swore he'd never drink again. Two weeks ago, she and Kitty sneaked out again. Her unstable portals derailed a roller coaster. Jean had to save them—and wipe the incident from the civilians' memories."

"That's… really bad." Zhou Yi frowned. "What did Charrice say?"

"She apologized afterward. But you know her—too casual, too confident nothing bad will happen again."

"Just as confident as me." Zhou Yi sighed. "So you've all been watching her closely, right?"

"Yes." Ororo hesitated for a moment, then admitted it. "Jean and I check on the students every hour during off-time. Your sister is a key observation target."

"Then promise me something, Ororo." Zhou Yi held her hands. "If something like this happens again—tell me. Let me handle it."

As her brother, he understood Charrice better than anyone. This would not be the last time.

Ororo instinctively wanted to refuse, but when she saw how serious he was, the words stuck in her throat. After a long pause, she whispered:

"I'll talk to Jean."

At that moment, over at the girls' dorm, Charrice was sprawled against the window frame, pouting angrily as she watched Zhou Yi and Ororo joking and driving away in his sports car.

"That jerk… always taking Ororo the old witch out to have fun. He never cares about me."

"Charrice… you're not seriously a brother-con, are you?" Kitty asked, startled by her expression.

"Kitty, you're asking for death!" Charrice shouted, instantly opening a crystal-panel portal and launching herself at Kitty. Kitty phased into mist and slipped straight through the bunk bed—only to land on a portal waiting beneath her.

"You're done, Kitty." Charrice grinned wickedly, wiggling her fingers until the poor girl convulsed, laughing helplessly.

"Stop—stop! Charrice, I'm sorry! You're not a brother-con! Really!" Kitty gasped between bursts of laughter.

"Nope!" Charrice kept tormenting her, adding a condition, "Unless you agree we go out again tonight."

Kitty instantly dematerialized into smoke, slipped through Charrice, and reformed behind her."Charrice, you're insane. Did you forget last time? Jean and Ororo nearly lost their minds. You got two days' detention!"

"I know." Charrice shrugged, finally releasing her. "But this time's different. We're going to a bar. And we're bringing Faye."

"You're crazy! You're only sixteen. Ororo will kill you." Kitty's mouth formed an O of disbelief.

"Hey, we're already sixteen. My idiot brother was doing all kinds of things at sixteen—why can't I? Or what, Kitty, you wanna stay a good little girl? A Barbie doll?"

Kitty froze at that, then pouted."I'm not helping you convince Faye. Also—you are a brother-con. I swear."

JeanGees, the world-famous Michelin three-star restaurant—New York's most renowned French dining establishment. Located in one of Manhattan's prime districts, it was a recognized fashion landmark and a stage for social status. Two types of people dined here: celebrities like Denzel Washington, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tom Cruise, and Nicole Kidman (though the last two would definitely not appear together), and successful business elites who enjoyed life.

Someone once joked that the most powerful woman in New York was the seat hostess at JeanGees—because she decided whether you got a table. And the measure of a man's status was whether he needed a reservation.

A silly metric, perhaps—but one loved by people like Tony Stark. In this regard, Zhou Yi admitted he'd been influenced by Stark.

When Zhou Yi escorted Ororo through the grand entrance of America's most famous restaurant, the hostess greeted them instantly, wearing a bright professional smile.

"Good evening, Mr. Zhou. May you and the lady enjoy your time with us."

"T-thank you," Ororo answered, a bit stiff. As a teacher, she rarely visited luxurious venues—much less one of this level. And it wasn't just about money or status. She was a mutant.

In America, while discrimination against mutants wasn't written into law, it was deeply ingrained—especially among the wealthy. If Zhou Yi weren't with her, Ororo likely wouldn't have made it through the door.

Cruel, but it was the truth of this so-called free nation.

Under the hostess's guidance, they were seated at one of the best tables. Along the way, several people raised their glasses to Zhou Yi; he either nodded politely or ignored them altogether.

No one complained. Compared to Tony Stark, Zhou Yi was practically gentle. Such was the privilege of being a major shareholder of Stark Industries.

To Zhou Yi, these people were just scenery. To Ororo, they were very noticeable.

"Oh my gosh—that's Nicole Kidman. I can't believe I'm seeing her in person."It was hard to imagine the normally composed Ororo acting like this.

Zhou Yi squeezed her hand with a small smile."Relax, sweetheart. Tonight, you're the one they'll be jealous of."

Ororo took a long breath, then whispered shyly:"Okay, okay… I know I'm acting like Cinderella. I just didn't think you'd bring me to a place like this."

Zhou Yi lifted his glass, smiling as he looked at her."Darling, you should know—these things are trivial for us."

"For you," Ororo corrected, rolling her eyes—beautifully. Zhou Yi responded by gently taking her hand and bringing it to his lips, offering the warmest smile.

"Miss Ororo… between us, I don't think we need to draw such strict lines. Do you?"

Fine wine, exquisite food, and a glamorous setting—irresistible ingredients for any woman. Even more so for two people already fond of each other.

When Zhou Yi later guided a slightly tipsy Ororo into his car and drove toward his home, it was impossible to say the night wouldn't become unforgettable.
