Staten Island, New York — Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
Driving an Audi R-Zero, Zhou Yi slowly pulled into the campus. As one of Audi's concept supercars — a model that would basically never appear on the market — it naturally drew the attention of many students.
Of course, that was exactly what Zhou Yi wanted. Only this kind of entrance made it worth "sacrificing his dignity" to borrow the car from Tony's reserved spot in the company garage.
As a board member of Stark Industries, getting his hands on any concept car wasn't really a problem. But, truth be told, Zhou Yi preferred motorcycles. And between all the options, borrowing (or "scamming") Tony was still the most convenient.
Parking in front of the main academic building, Zhou Yi stepped out in a sharp suit, carrying a full armful of bright red roses as he walked into the school.
It was around three in the afternoon. Classes had just ended, and students were running all over. Since this was Xavier's School — a school for mutants — odd or unusual appearances were expected. But Zhou Yi didn't care. After all, his own little sister was one of them; it would be absurd to discriminate against anyone here.
Naturally, his appearance drew plenty of attention. Most people on campus knew one another; Xavier didn't allow students much freedom to go off-campus, so faces were familiar. But Zhou Yi was clearly an outsider — and a striking one at that. Though ethnically Chinese, his tall, well-built frame and handsome features made him stand out; he didn't give Westerners the "all Asians look the same" impression. (And, to be fair, to other ethnicities Westerners often looked the same too.)
To many students, Zhou Yi was a stranger. To some others, he definitely wasn't.
"Hey! Yi, when did you get back?!"
A purple energy screen suddenly unfolded in front of him, and the next moment something heavy landed on him.
It was a girl of sixteen or seventeen. Her long wine-red hair was braided into a thick rope down her back. Her emerald-green eyes sparkled, marked with mysterious patterns around them — giving her an almost elven, otherworldly beauty. She even had pointed ears.
"You jerk! You went off to China by yourself and didn't take me! How do I have such an irresponsible brother?"Her long, toned legs clamped firmly around him koala-style, while the stack of books in her arms bumped hard against his forehead. The teasing earned Zhou Yi plenty of jealous glares from nearby boys — but the word "哥哥" ("brother") filled them with sudden, crushing despair.
This guy… big brother?!
Getting bullied by his own little sister like this, Zhou Yi could only smile helplessly. He discreetly hid the roses behind his back to keep them safe, and then used his free hand to pry the "tree-koala" off of him and set her on the ground.
"Sharice, you know I've been busy. And I did give you the key to the Upper East Side apartment. You can do whatever you want there."
Sharice puffed her cheeks, looking annoyed."First of all, don't call me Sharice in front of other people — call me by my codename, Blink. Second, that Upper East Side apartment is boring. No pool, no game room, not even decent takeout menus. Third, my dear brother, do you think Professor gives us long vacations?"
Zhou Yi chuckled, threw an arm over her shoulder, and walked her toward the side of the hall.
"First, Sharice, your codename is ridiculously lame. Second, I can give you the Long Island villa — pool, game room, a rec hall, a big lawn with a go-kart track. Only condition? You convince Mom. Third, I don't know how Professor schedules your vacations. I only know I was called here by Ororo for a parent-teacher meeting. So tell me, dear little sister — what exactly did you do this time?"
"That was just a misunderstanding!" Sharice bumped her head against his shoulder angrily. "I just accidentally opened a portal into the street! You can ask Kitty — she'll testify for me. Right, Kitty?!"
A girl with soft brown hair came running toward them, hugging a stack of books."Yes! Yes! I can vouch for her, sir! I promise!"
Zhou Yi glanced at his sister's triumphant expression, then at Kitty's nervous one. He knew exactly what this was — the classic "minion helps the boss dodge blame" routine. But he hadn't intended to press the issue anyway.
Smiling warmly at the brown-haired girl, he said:
"Relax, sweetheart. I'm not a 'sir.' I'm Zhou Yi — Sharice's brother. You can call me Yi. This is our first meeting, but I'm sure Sharice has told you about me. Don't worry, I'm not like Scott, that stiff-faced poker robot. I won't give you girls a hard time."
He extended his hand with a bright, friendly smile.
Kitty blushed, shaking his hand lightly."Hello, Mr. Yi. Sharice talks about you all the time. I'm Kitty Pryde — her best friend. You can call me Kitty."
"Nice to meet you, Kitty." Zhou Yi smiled, ruffling his sister's hair. "I'm glad Sharice has a friend like you. She may be scatterbrained, likes pranks, and acts like a little kid sometimes… but she's always loyal to her friends."
Sharice punched him in the waist."You idiot! I'm your sister! What are you doing, holding a press conference to tell the world how terrible I am?!"
"Of course. Shame none of the reporters would bother writing about something that boring."
That did it — Sharice launched herself at him again, flailing wildly.
Kitty couldn't help laughing at the chaotic sibling brawl.
"Kitty! Whose side are you on?!" Sharice shouted while wrestling Zhou Yi, glaring at her friend's betrayal.
Kitty flusteredly covered her mouth."Sharice, you know I didn't mean it… Mr. Yi was just exaggerating! I swear!"
With another blink of purple light, Sharice reappeared behind Kitty, clinging to her arm as she huffed at Zhou Yi:
"My friend and I refuse to deal with you, you playboy! May Ororo throw you out the window!"
"Hey! Sharice — I'm your brother!" Zhou Yi protested, speechless. Wasn't she supposed to be on his side?
"I'm on the side of women," she declared proudly, flipping her long braid before pulling Kitty away without looking back.
A soft, warm voice sounded from behind him."Unresolvable family troubles?"
Zhou Yi turned and saw a red-haired beauty leaning against the door frame. He sighed and replied like a weary father:
"Not at all. Just feeling a little sentimental about how fast kids grow up."
"You're still just as amusing, Yi." Jean Grey walked forward, smiling. "The roses are beautiful. And… thank you for the gift."
"A year without seeing you, and you're still stunning, Jean." Zhou Yi hugged her lightly. "Honestly, I thought red roses would match your hair perfectly — but someone definitely wouldn't agree. And I'd rather not have my gift turned to ashes the next morning."
At the mention of a certain someone, he couldn't stop his lips from twitching. Clearly, that person left quite an unpleasant impression on him.
"I don't think red roses suit me. They're too fiery… too bold." Jean, ever the picture of elegance and intellect, clearly thought he was just flattering her.
"That's only on the surface." Zhou Yi stepped closer, eyes locked onto hers with an intense, almost predatory confidence.
"The Jean I see is like fire — passionate, wild, unrestrained. Someone who brings light to my eyes and warmth to my heart."
His voice dropped, low and intimate. Their faces drifted closer and closer, until—
Jean suddenly shoved him back.
She glanced around, face slightly pink. Fortunately, the students who had been watching earlier had scurried off the moment they saw a teacher; no one had witnessed that awkward scene.
Still, her heart was racing.
"Yi—do you even know what you're doing? Or do you think this is funny?" she whispered sharply.
"Jean, you know I meant every word. I could bet my life on it. You're just the one refusing to accept it." Zhou Yi apologized with a smile, yet stepped forward again.
Jean pushed him back, turned, took two steps—then stopped.
"You're being reckless. I don't know what's going on in your head. But you need to remember—Scott, Ororo, and I… we all care about you…"
"I know that. What I don't understand… is you. And that shouldn't be a problem."
"I won't accept this. And stop saying things like that."
Leaving those hurried words behind, Jean walked away quickly, disappearing from sight.
"…What a strange woman." Zhou Yi exhaled, shrugged, and continued onward with the roses still in his arms.
