As a child he's noticed many strange things in this world. Not just in church but at school on public transportation even on television and in games. Nothing was taught about in school. If this was on purpose or not he had to figure out for himself. Yet at such a young age he would have never been able to find the information needed. Computers were around but they were still in the initial stages where you couldn't do much. He probably could have asked but they would've just called him crazy or lied. Plus he wasn't the type to talk much. So life for the next few years were school home games and television. There was also something Charles didn't realize that same sort of energy was inside himself and many took notice. That's why everyday his life was hell. Him always observing and pushing his mental fortitude to extreme limits at such a young age. Is part of the reason his eyesight started deteriorating. His eyesight didn't deteriorate the constant use enhanced his peripheral vision and attention to even the smallest details and his mind moved 10x faster than the average human. It got him bullied constantly for being to smart because most others were more about brute force than using there mind. That was his life up until 13.
