Chapter 31 - Food hunting

All of the other boys began looking around. Besides the main camp area, the rest of the forest was being used to hunt nearby wildlife and

Collecting wood.

This was the green light to go and find food. Jairo was immensely hungry. But he turned to his left and saw the boy next to him, Gabriel was barely alive. Cooking meat would take too long. He needed some berries in his gut as soon as possible.

"Excuse me." He stated, to Gabriel who looked over at him. "We should look around to collect berries together."

Theon looked him up and down with a questioning expression. "You two may do that and get full for the short term. I'll go hunt us some game."

With that he turned around and began running into the woods. Many of the boys had begun doing the same already. they were likely out hunting right now.

"Well, we're already a bit behind. You with me?"

Gabriel absentmindedly nodded his head, and Jairo had to physically restrain his urge to sigh.

'Of course, the bastard who brought the guy onto the team suddenly wants nothing to do with him.'

Upon finding the blueberry bushes, Jairo begins popping some off and stuffing his face. Ripping off one after the other, lifting his head up and throwing them into his mouth.

He turns to see Gabriel doing the same, Just actually eating them normally.

By whatever higher power exists in this world he needed to put some meat on those bones.

Just looking at his overall appearance, it made him wonder about what happened.

'What the hell could have made a boy so young turn out like that? Did he not have parents?'

"Excuse me." Jairo said, grabbing his attention.

"Was there something you liked to do before you were taken here?" Jairo said as he plucked a few more berries.

Gabriel looked at him and looked as though he was pondering something. "Does it matter?"

'This pessimistic attitude is going to be the death of me.' Outwardly, Jairo maintained a smile.

"Of coarse it matters. It's the reason you want to go back home. Are you saying your time before coming here didn't matter? What could make you throw it to the wayside?"

'Why does this sound like an interrogation?! I gotta tone it down a notch.'

Gabriel simply shook his head, refusing to answer and continuing to eat. Jairo was already feeling a migraine coming on.

He was about to continue, but it had been a few minutes since Theon had been gone. "I'll go see Theon." He said as he quickly began sprinting into the direction he last seen him go.

'I'm not sure what his deal is, but if it's too much for even him to unpack, it is absolutely none of my business.'

So much for trying to build an efficient team.

Jairo listened around. He heard young boys pinning dear to the ground, he smelled Fred's blood as he ran past and in between every tree in his way.

He jumped down and saw two wolves picking apart a dead dear. Surprisingly enough, the werewolf simply waved his hand and waved.

Another duo who was probably more efficient and affective than his team of three.

Eventually he heard a familiar voice, but it seemed to be struggling. It grunted in pain, and at that moment Jairo knew he had to hurry.

Upon speeding up, he walked in to see Theon dodging a Bear. He had a few gashes across his upper right chest and shoulder area.

The bear was in a frenzy, Charging at him. Theon however seemed tired of running.

He charged at the beast, jumping to the side to avoid being pinned down and raked his hand across its face.

A grin formed on the young boys face. Nothing felt quite like revenge. An eye for an eye didn't help much, but it made it even.

Just then, He saw Jairo getting ever closer with his blade drawn. A new hope surged into him.

That idiot had finally decided to do something that mattered. Yet He saw Jairos expression beginning to Change to one of worry.

Shit. He had taken his eyes off the bear.

The next thing he saw was the bear, furiously using its hands to hold him down. His chest was doing to cave in at this rate.

Jairo quickly sped up his pace. He heard Theon yelling back at the bear into its face. He ran and jumped over the bears back, blade pointing down in an overhead stab.

Theon saw the bear rear back its head, showing him a mouth full of sharp and yellow teeth. The next second, he saw a blade coming through the bears mouth.

It didn't fall over, rather it turned for a moment and looked around. He began to walk bat toward the stream it likely came from. But a few steps in it collapsed.

Jairo picked up his blade, pulling it out of the beast, before turning around to face Theon.

'This idiot!'

Theon got up and cracked his neck. "Thank your for finally showing up. Would have been a lot easier if you were early, but I can hardly complain."

Jairo turned to him in annoyance. Almost anger.

"Why did you fight it instead of running away?"

"I didn't. I killed a dear and it tried to kill me for it."

Theon said with a hint of indignation.

'HOW CAN A PERSON BE THIS DUMB!?'

"Then why not go look for another one? Any more and you would have been too exhausted to run. It would have beaten you in battle of stamina and had you dead to rights."

Theon put a hand over his face. "Well, that's what you have a team for. Mine was nowhere to be found at the moment. I was hungry and didn't have time to wait!"

"Then you would be dead! I'm sure that's what you you prefer right?" Jairo could no longer hide his anger as he gritted his teeth and his eyebrows furrowed.

"Your recklessness will kill you." Jairo said with a hint of finality.

"What are you, My mother? Move."

Theon walked past him, intentionally bumping into his shoulder and causing him to stumble back.

Taking in a deep breath. Yes that was the trick. It was the only thing that could calm him down in this moment, which ment it was also the only thing keeping Theon's head on his shoulders at this moment.

Just breathe.
