It bloomed deep in Aren's shoulders, sharp and unrelenting, dragging him upward from darkness. His eyes opened to stone and iron again—but this chamber was narrower, colder. His arms were suspended above him, bound by rune-etched cuffs that hummed softly, vibrating against his bones.
Not chains.
Limits.
Kars Vell stood across the room, hands clasped behind his back. The blue flame burned lower here, its light swallowing color rather than giving it.
"You lasted longer than expected," Kars said calmly. "Most men scream within minutes."
Aren inhaled through his nose. His breath shook once, then steadied. "You didn't bring me here to admire endurance."
Kars smiled faintly. "Correct. I brought you here to remove excess."
He gestured.
The cuffs tightened.
Agony lanced through Aren's arms as pressure crushed inward, not breaking bone, not tearing muscle—compressing. Every nerve screamed at once, overwhelming, precise.
Aren clenched his jaw.
Inside him, the warmth reacted violently.
Not outward.
Inward.
His bones resisted.
Not stronger—denser.
Kars's eyes sharpened. "There it is," he murmured. "You feel it too, don't you? Something responding when it shouldn't."
Aren didn't answer. He focused on breath. On stillness. On not letting the pain decide who he was.
Minutes passed.
Then hours.
Finally, the pressure eased.
Aren sagged, gasping, sweat-soaked and shaking—but intact.
Kars approached, crouching until they were eye level. "This city survives by control. The pit is chaos shaped into profit. Men like you introduce variables." He tilted his head. "Variables must be corrected."
He stood. "Tomorrow, you fight again."
Aren laughed softly, breathless. "That's your correction?"
Kars paused. "No. That's your measurement."
When the cuffs released, Aren collapsed.
As darkness crept back in, the pressure returned—different this time.
Colder.
