Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Quiet After

Silence followed blood.

That was the first strange thing Aren noticed.

After the cleanser fell, after the gates sealed and the crowd was dismissed, the pit did not roar. It did not celebrate. It waited. The torches burned lower than usual, shadows clinging to the stone like listening creatures.

Aren sat alone in his cell.

No chains.

That alone told him everything.

Food arrived without guards. Clean water. Fresh bandages. No words were spoken, but eyes lingered too long through the bars. He did not touch the food until the footsteps faded.

Something had shifted.

In the pit, attention was more dangerous than hatred.

When he slept, he dreamed not of fire or snow—but of watching. Of something vast pressing its awareness downward, curious rather than cruel. He woke with his heart steady and his hands still.

Later that day, a man entered his cell.

He wore no armor. No insignia. Only dark robes and an expression trained into neutrality.

"You are no longer scheduled," the man said.

Aren said nothing.

"Fights will come when required. Until then, you will remain… contained."

Contained.

The word amused him.

The man hesitated, then added, "You will not speak of the cleanser."

"I don't speak," Aren replied.

The man flinched before he could stop himself.

That night, Aren understood the truth.

The pit had stopped trying to kill him.

It had begun trying to understand him.
