Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Shape of SurvivalAren woke alone.

No chains. No cuffs. Just a thin pallet and a body that felt… wrong.

He sat up slowly, testing himself. The pain was still there—but it had changed. Where once it flared wildly, now it sat contained, compressed into something manageable. His ribs felt heavier. His spine steadier.

He flexed his fingers.

The tremor had lessened.

Not gone.

Refined.

Aren closed his eyes and focused inward.

The warmth responded immediately.

Not a surge.

A presence.

January Record: Passive Observation.

Current Integrity: Improved.

Aren exhaled. "So that's how you work," he whispered. "Not gifts. Adjustments."

The door creaked open.

Lyra stepped inside.

Her nose was bruised, her movement stiff—but her eyes were sharp, alive. She leaned against the wall, studying him.

"They said you broke," she said. "I didn't believe them."

Aren met her gaze. "You came to check?"

She shrugged. "Curiosity. And debt." She hesitated. "You could've killed me."

"I didn't need to."

She laughed quietly. "That's what scares them."

They sat in silence for a moment.

Lyra spoke again. "Kars is preparing something. Not a normal match. He's bringing in a cleanser."

Aren's brow furrowed. "A what?"

"Someone trained to erase anomalies," she said. "Men who don't fight the way the pit expects."

The warmth stirred.

Not fear.

Readiness.

"Why tell me?" Aren asked.

Lyra looked away. "Because if you die, this place goes back to being predictable." She met his eyes again. "And I don't want that."

Footsteps echoed outside.

Lyra pushed off the wall. "Survive," she said simply, then slipped out.

Aren stood alone.

He rolled his shoulders, feeling how the muscles moved differently now—how force distributed instead of collapsing inward. He stepped forward and struck the air once.

The motion was clean.

Controlled.

Efficient.

Not stronger.

Sharper.

Somewhere above, false gods feasted.

Somewhere beyond sight, the Record watched.

And for the first time, Aren understood the shape of his path.

He would not explode into power.

He would condense.

And when the cleanser came, the pit would learn the difference.
