KAYLA'S POV
I enter the house and go straight to the kitchen, checking the fridge.
Kayla: Roselyn! Where's my beer?!
I call out to the maid.
Mother: I threw it out.
My adoptive mother's voice comes from behind me. I turn to face her.
Kayla: Why?
Mother: Because alcohol is not good for teenagers like you. It's bad for your health and your school life.
Kayla: Oh, really? Since when did you start caring about anything related to me?
Mother: Of course I care. You're my daughter. Even if you're adopted, I still consider you my own.
Kayla: Oh, really? Then why didn't you think about that when I was mourning my adoptive dad's death, and you didn't even wait a week before marrying Mr. Yuichi?
You act like you care about me and everyone else, but in reality, you only care about yourself. You're just selfish....
She interrupts me.
Mother: Enough! Go to your room right now, before I lose control!
I chuckle sarcastically.
Kayla: Why? Was the truth too bitter for you?
I storm upstairs, slam my bedroom door shut.
God damn it. Now that woman won't even let me drink in peace…
I stare at the wall, then an idea hits me.
I grab my school bag and take out my phone.
I text Annie.
Kayla (text):
Out of beer. Bring some when you come over this evening, but not in front of that woman. She'll throw it out again.
I toss the phone onto the bed and head to the bathroom to take a shower.
