Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 33: Curse?

KAYLA'S POV:

I came home with so much going through my head, hundreds of questions about Hari and his debt.

As I entered the house, I saw my adoptive mother and stepfather standing in front of me. My adoptive mother was frowning upon seeing me, while my stepfather ran his hands through his hair and across his face anxiously.

"What happened?"

After a moment of silence, my adoptive mother came toward me, grabbed my arm, and shook it violently.

"Did you get relief now? After destroying us, huh?"

"Why? What happened?"

"The deal you rejected, because of that, the Hierarchy Company has backed out all its investments from your father's company."

"What?"

"Yes! And because of your stubbornness, this family has to face a massive loss now!"

"I'll talk to them… I'll find a way...."

She laughed mockingly.

"A way? There's no way out now! If you hadn't prioritized that old building over this family, we wouldn't have seen this day. But no… how could you care for this family?"

Her voice turned colder.

"Because this isn't your real family, right? I regret the day Elvin (my adoptive father) brought you into my life. I should never have let you in. You're nothing but a curse to every family."

A curse?

"First, because of you, I lost my husband. Now you're trying to destroy my second husband's life as well! Why didn't you die with your real family? Why did you come to us, to destroy ours?"

She screamed.

"Just do us a favor and die!"

She stormed upstairs and slammed her bedroom door shut. My stepfather sank onto the couch, his face buried in his hands.

The word "curse" stabbed my heart like a dagger. I always thought no one could break me, but today, her words were eating me alive from the inside.

I couldn't speak. Even when I tried, no words came out. It was as if my voice had been stolen.

Memories of my real family and my adoptive father's death drained all the strength from my body. My hands and legs trembled uncontrollably. Tears streamed down my face without stopping.

I turned away and walked out of the house.
