Chapter 2 – A Story in the Dirt

The villagers continued staring at Raphael.

Some looked curious.

Others looked suspicious.

A few simply whispered among themselves.

Raphael sighed quietly.

"…Great first impression."

The old man with the cane spoke again.

"If you truly came from far away, you must be tired."

Raphael blinked.

"…A little."

The old man nodded slowly.

"Our village is small, but we do not turn away travelers."

A few villagers murmured in agreement.

Raphael relaxed slightly.

"Thanks. I appreciate it."

The old man pointed toward a nearby wooden house.

"You can rest there for now."

Raphael bowed his head slightly.

"Thank you… uh…"

"Garron," the old man replied.

"Village elder."

"Nice to meet you, Elder Garron."

The house was simple.

Very simple.

A wooden table.

Two chairs.

A straw bed in the corner.

No electricity.

No lights except for a small oil lamp.

Raphael sat on the bed and leaned back.

"…Okay."

He stared at the wooden ceiling.

"Let's review."

Step one.

He had been transported to another world.

Step two.

That world was apparently a flat plane floating in something called the Chaos Void.

Step three.

He had no money.

No job.

And no idea how this world worked.

Raphael covered his face with his hands.

"…Fantastic."

A knock came from the door.

Before he could answer, it opened slightly.

A young girl peeked inside.

It was the same girl who had pointed at his clothes earlier.

She stepped inside cautiously.

"You're the strange traveler."

Raphael groaned.

"That nickname again?"

The girl walked closer, studying him with curious eyes.

"My name is Lina."

Raphael sat up.

"I'm Raphael."

Lina tilted her head.

"Your clothes are still weird."

"…Thank you."

Lina sat on the chair across from him.

"What do you do?" she asked suddenly.

Raphael thought for a moment.

What did he do?

Back on Earth, he had just been an ordinary guy.

Someone who loved reading stories.

Watching anime.

Drawing random characters sometimes.

Nothing impressive.

But here…

Maybe that was different.

Raphael stood up and walked outside.

"Come with me."

Lina followed curiously.

They stopped near the village well.

Raphael crouched down and picked up a small stick.

Then he began drawing in the dirt.

At first, Lina didn't understand what he was doing.

But slowly, shapes appeared.

A figure.

A man holding a sword.

Lina leaned closer.

"What's that?"

"A hero," Raphael said.

"Hero?"

"Someone in a story."

Lina's eyes brightened.

"A story?"

Raphael nodded.

He continued drawing.

Beside the hero, he sketched a much larger figure.

Wings.

Claws.

Sharp teeth.

Lina gasped.

"A dragon!"

Raphael smiled slightly.

"Exactly."

The girl crouched beside him, completely focused now.

"What happens?"

Raphael drew another scene.

The hero standing before the dragon.

Sword raised.

"The dragon attacked his village," Raphael said.

"So the hero challenges it."

Lina stared at the drawing.

"Can he win?"

Raphael shrugged.

"That depends on the story."

More villagers slowly gathered around them.

At first they pretended to walk past.

But soon curiosity pulled them closer.

A farmer scratched his head.

"You're drawing a dragon?"

Raphael nodded.

"And a hero."

The farmer crossed his arms.

"No human can fight a dragon."

Lina immediately protested.

"But it's a story!"

Raphael chuckled.

"Exactly."

He drew another scene.

The dragon breathing fire.

The hero jumping forward.

The villagers leaned closer.

Even the old village elder appeared again.

Raphael finished the final drawing.

The hero's sword cutting through the dragon's scales.

Lina's eyes sparkled.

"He did it!"

The farmer shook his head.

"Impossible."

"But cool," another villager admitted.

Raphael leaned back and looked at the simple drawings.

Just rough sketches in dirt.

But everyone was staring at them.

Thinking about them.

Imagining the scene.

And then something strange happened.

For a brief moment…

The air above the drawing shimmered.

Very faint.

Like heat rising from a road.

Raphael's eyes widened.

"…Did anyone see that?"

The villagers looked confused.

"See what?"

The shimmer disappeared.

But Raphael was certain he had seen it.

His heart began beating faster.

If what he suspected was true…

Then this world really did respond to stories.

Not just the words.

But the belief behind them.

Lina tugged his sleeve.

"Tell more!"

Several villagers nodded.

"Yes, what happens next?"

Raphael smiled slowly.

He stood up and brushed the dirt from his hands.

"That was just the beginning."

Lina pouted.

"You can't stop there!"

Raphael grinned.

"That's how stories work."

The villagers groaned.

But Raphael's mind was racing.

If even a small drawing could cause that reaction…

Then what would happen if he created a real story?

A proper one.

Written.

Detailed.

Something people could read and believe.

Raphael looked up at the strange flowing sky of the Chaos Void Plane.

Excitement burned in his chest.

"…I need paper."

Because if stories truly held power here…

Then he had just taken the first step.

And the next one would be much bigger.
