Chapter 8 - Chapter 7: The First Trap

The night in Nova Juba was alive with danger. Smoke drifted through the streets, and flickering neon lights cast long shadows across the abandoned buildings. The team moved cautiously, sticking to the shadows, every step echoing in the silence.

Kai led the way, scanning every corner. Milo trailed behind, humming nervously. "You know," he muttered, "I didn't sign up for apocalypse tours. I was promised comfy labs and snacks."

Lira shot him a glance. "Focus, Milo."

Before Kai could respond, a sudden flash of blue light blinded them momentarily. A barrier of energy materialized ahead—a force field blocking the alleyway.

Kai froze. "This… isn't supposed to be here."

Milo raised his hands. "Great. A magic wall. Awesome. Just what I needed."

A calm, cold voice echoed from the shadows. "I've been expecting you."

From the darkness stepped a figure in a sleek black suit. His face was partially hidden under a hood. He moved like a predator, confident and unnerving.

Kai recognized him immediately from the security footage Lira had pulled earlier. "You're the insider… working with Valen," he said.

The figure's lips curled into a faint smile. "Clever. But being clever won't save you tonight."

Lira stepped in front of Kai. "We don't want a fight. We just want to understand the signal."

The figure laughed, low and menacing. "And yet, here you are, running through my city. Rules are for those who follow them."

Milo muttered under his breath, "I hate rules."

Kai noticed something odd—a faint shimmer along the rooftops. Raze was watching. His face was tense, conflicted. He didn't move in immediately… but Kai could tell he was deciding something.

The insider raised his hand. The energy barrier surged, cutting off their escape. Sparks flew, and the alley glowed with dangerous light.

Kai turned to Lira. "We can't fight it head-on. We need another way."

Lira scanned her portable console. "There's a service tunnel nearby. It's narrow and unstable, but it leads beneath the city. If we move fast, we can get through before the barrier reacts."

Milo's eyes widened. "Narrow tunnels? This is like my dream survival exercise!"

Kai shot him a look. "You'll survive if you keep quiet."

They ran, sliding under pipes and ducking through debris. The insider followed, his barrier forcing them to dodge and climb. Sparks rained down, and a pipe exploded behind Milo.

"Too close!" Milo yelled, ducking.

Kai led them into the narrow service tunnel. It was dark, suffocating, and smelled of rust and decay. The walls closed in as they moved, the only light coming from Lira's portable console.

Kai whispered, "We're not safe yet. Someone knows about the signal—and they're willing to kill for it."

Suddenly, the tunnel shook violently. A section of the ceiling collapsed, blocking their path. Milo stumbled but Kai grabbed him. "Keep moving!"

Lira scanned ahead. "There's a maintenance ladder up. It might lead to a rooftop exit."

As they climbed, Kai noticed Raze's shadow on the wall. He wasn't attacking. He was watching… silently.

Milo whispered, "I hate this guy, but if he's helping secretly, I kinda like him."

Kai nodded grimly. "Just don't trust anyone completely. Not yet."

At the top, the team burst onto the rooftop. Below, the city spread out like a grid of danger and chaos. The insider's figure was gone.

But Kai knew this wasn't the end.

He turned to Lira. "The signal… it's bigger than we thought. And so is the threat."

Lira's eyes met his. "Then we stick together. No one gets left behind."

Milo grinned, exhaustion evident but spirit intact. "You know, for almost dying, this is kinda fun."

Kai allowed himself a small, grim smile. "Survival is the first step. Understanding comes next."

And somewhere in the shadows, the first whispers of betrayal moved like a living thing, watching, waiting…
