Chapter 2 - chapter 2:- The life before death pt.2

There was no word from the receiver of the call; they simply hung up after a moment. They didn't deny his request though, Johan knew where to go to get the information he asked for.

The place he called was a secret organisation that had both power users and non-power users, who worked for only one thing; that is, 'killing the power users' – they were called the Juries of Death.

Johan had also secretly become a jury member nine years ago; aside from himself, only Hans and Anna know this, and they are not troubled by it at all. In fact, they sometimes also help him with his work.

After they hung up the phone, Johan went to his mother and asked for dinner. His mother had already prepared the dinner and was putting food on the plates.

Johan's only family left now was his mother; his father and his younger brother had died in a car accident when he was 4 years old. Johan only knows about his father and brother from the family photos and some stories told by his mother.

Their death was also a reason for Johan to walk down the road of killing even though he didn't have any memories with them. The major reason was that he wanted to become the voice for the powerless humans, and Johan was not the only one with this motive.

All the juries had the same motive, whether primary or secondary; they wanted to be the voice and hands of the non-power users.

"Mom, after dinner I need to go to the mall; I have a night shift there. So… please prepare some food for me."

Johan's mother was surprised to hear this; Johan had most of the time stayed at home and would only go to the mall for a night shift once every few months. His mother was working as a supervisor in a government facility; his father also had worked there as a famous and brilliant scientist. Because of this, his mother did not know that part-time jobs don't work like that.

"Hmm… yeah, okay, will Spargel and Hühnerfrikassee be enough?" asked his mother.

"Yeah, probably... I will be back by 2 a.m.; you can go to sleep. No need to wait for me, okay?"

"Ok, and I forgot to ask, how was the festival? You all came back quick."

Johan's hands and mouth stopped for a moment, but then he continued and replied.

"Well... The festival was cancelled because some students were protesting against the power users, we all stayed there for a few minutes and came back, nothing else."

Johan lied; he didn't want to ruin the mood. His mother had always been happy and cheerful. She was the reason Johan didn't become a merciless killer even though he could have. If he would have told her the truth, then she would have started worrying about him nonstop.

After finishing his food, he went back to his room to wear something formal while his mother was preparing his food. He sat down on his bed and called Hans.

Hans looked mentally strong, someone who would be the first to calm others down in case of chaos. He is that person on the outside, but on the inside his mental health is the weakest out of these four. Johan called him to check up on him, but the call was forwarded to voicemail.

"Hans... It's me. Bring everyone to my home tomorrow. It's been quite a while since we talked peacefully with each other; you and Anna kept arguing last time, and just forget about what happened today... Let's talk tomorrow, okay? Come to my house by 11am tomorrow. Bye."

Johan's mother called him to the kitchen to get his food. Johan took the food, said goodnight to her and went straight outside. He didn't lie about going to the mall, but he did lie that he was going for work.

He was going to one of the main bases of 'The Juries of Death', which was five hundred feet below the mall's basement parking.

At the base there was information on everything regarding the power user, including their abilities, their limits and their weaknesses. The black card that Johan had was a keycard that was given to him to gain access to the hidden base.

The elevator that took him downwards was an old mechanical elevator that worked via a pulley handled by two people at the base; this also allowed them to stop anyone else who was not authorised.

The doors of the elevator opened, and Johan was greeted by all the staff members there and the other juries who were there at the moment. Johan was not surprised by this because Johan was the most experienced and skilled and valued jury member of the organisation. For him this has been normal for the past five years; there he gave the food he had brought to the girl at the front desk, 'Elesie Muller'. Their relationship was just a senior and a junior friendship, but 'friendship' was a sorrowful word for their organisation.

Given their line of work, anyone could be betrayed and killed all for the sake of protecting themselves.

But one of the reasons why Johan was liked by everyone was because he always befriended everyone in the organisation even after knowing he could be ratted out anytime.

The base was a shabby one; it looked like a big underground slum. This was because their base could be found anytime, and then they would be forced to escape and relocate. It was a kind of place where one could not stay for a long time because of the environment and the threat of being found anytime.

There at the front desk he was greeted by a man in his fifties with his face covered in scars and burns.

"Welcome, Sir Johan. The information you ordered is complete. Come with me."

The man was one of the oldest jurors and also a power user whose wife, daughter, son and parents were tortured and killed by the power user's society for failure to complete a mission. He took Johan to a small room filled with old computers and big processors.

"We have found out who were the culprits behind the massacre that took place this morning at the 'Berlin College of Robotics and Other Sciences'The culprits are two foreign power users who are one of the main power users of the government." The old man, while saying this, pulled out two documents from a metallic box.

"This is the complete information regarding them, their names, address, family and everything else"

he handed the papers to Johan

"James Clerk and Jason Wills," Johan said to himself with only pity in his eyes and anger. The anger was for the crime they had committed, and the pity was for the brutal torture they will go through with.
