Chapter 30 - THE CLOCK THAT NEVER MOVED

The old clock tower had stood at Sakura Blossom High for nearly seventy years. Every student passed it without giving it a second thought, accepting it as just another part of the campus. But after finding the map inside Room 117, Ethan couldn't look at it the same way anymore. The giant clock had stopped at 10:17, and according to Daniel's note, "The second key is hidden where time stopped." It couldn't be a coincidence.

Throughout the morning classes, Ethan barely heard a single word the teachers said. His notebook remained open, but instead of taking notes, he kept drawing the same map again and again. The underground passages... Room 117... the clock tower... Lucas... Daniel... every clue somehow connected, yet the complete picture remained hidden.

When the lunch bell rang, Noah dropped into the seat beside him with his tray full of food.

"You've been staring at that notebook for twenty minutes," he said while opening a packet of chips. "Either you've fallen in love with geography, or we're about to do something incredibly stupid."

Olivia laughed. "Considering we've already opened a hidden room, I think we passed 'incredibly stupid' a long time ago."

Elena sat opposite Ethan and quietly studied his face. "You want to go to the clock tower today, don't you?"

Ethan nodded.

"I have to."

She didn't argue. Instead, she simply smiled. "Then we're coming with you."

Noah pointed at himself dramatically. "See? This is why friendship is dangerous. One person decides to investigate a haunted clock tower, and suddenly everyone has to go."

"You can stay behind," Olivia teased.

"No chance," Noah replied. "If something terrifying happens, I want to witness it personally."

For the first time that day, Ethan smiled without realizing it.

Classes ended earlier because of the Autumn Festival rehearsals. Students rushed toward the auditorium while teachers supervised decorations across the campus. It was the perfect opportunity to disappear unnoticed.

The four friends quietly made their way toward the oldest corner of Sakura Blossom High.

Unlike the rest of the school, the clock tower stood alone behind a small garden that no one seemed to visit anymore. Ivy covered most of its stone walls, and several windows had been broken for years. A rusty iron gate surrounded the entrance, secured with a heavy chain.

Noah looked at the gate.

"So... brilliant plan?"

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out the brass key.

"I don't know."

Elena frowned. "That's the Room 117 key."

"I know."

"But maybe..."

He stepped closer to the gate.

"...it opens more than one lock."

Slowly, he inserted the key into the old padlock.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then...

Click.

The lock opened effortlessly.

The four friends exchanged stunned looks.

"This key..." Olivia whispered.

"...was never meant for just one door."

The inside of the tower smelled of damp wood and old stone. A narrow spiral staircase stretched upward into darkness. Every step creaked beneath their feet, and dust danced through the thin rays of sunlight slipping between cracked windows.

Halfway up, Elena suddenly stopped.

"Listen."

Everyone froze.

From somewhere above them...

A faint ticking sound echoed through the tower.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Noah frowned.

"I thought the clock stopped twenty years ago."

"It did," Ethan replied quietly.

"So what's making that sound?"

No one answered.

The ticking continued.

Slow.

Steady.

Almost... alive.

After climbing several more flights of stairs, they reached the top.

The enormous clock mechanism filled the circular room. Massive gears, rusted chains, and broken wooden beams surrounded them. The giant hands of the clock remained frozen at 10:17, exactly as they had seen from outside.

Yet the ticking hadn't stopped.

Ethan slowly walked toward the center of the room.

His eyes fell on an old wooden table tucked beneath the gears.

Resting on top of it was a pocket watch.

It was still working.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Elena picked it up carefully.

"It can't be..."

The watch looked brand new, untouched by time.

On its silver cover was the same symbol they had found inside Daniel's journal—a small cherry blossom engraved inside a circle.

When Ethan opened the watch, a folded piece of paper slipped onto the floor.

He unfolded it carefully.

Only one sentence was written inside.

"If you have reached the clock tower... it means I failed."

Daniel.

It had to be him.

Noah swallowed nervously.

"This guy really liked leaving dramatic notes."

Ethan continued reading.

"The second key isn't made of metal. It's a person."

Silence filled the room.

"A person?" Olivia whispered.

"What does that even mean?"

Before anyone could answer, footsteps echoed from the staircase below.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone else had entered the tower.

The friends instinctively switched off their phone flashlights.

The footsteps came closer.

Closer.

Then a familiar voice drifted upward.

"I know you're here."

Lucas.

He emerged into the room, but he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood Principal James Walker.

The principal looked at Ethan, then at the pocket watch in Elena's hands. There was no surprise on his face.

Only disappointment.

"I was hoping," he said quietly, "that you would never find this place."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You knew about Room 117."

"Yes."

"You knew Daniel."

"Yes."

"And you've been hiding the truth from everyone."

The principal closed his eyes for a brief moment before answering.

"I wasn't hiding the truth..."

"...I was protecting you from it."

The ticking of the pocket watch suddenly grew louder.

Then, without anyone touching it...

The frozen clock above them shuddered.

For the first time in twenty years...

The giant minute hand moved.

Just one step.

And somewhere deep beneath Sakura Blossom High...

A loud metallic door unlocked.
