Chapter 23 - I want something real

The evening air was calm, carrying the faint scent of rain and exhaust from the city streets.

Aduni and Tade sat across from each other at a small, quiet restaurant tucked away from the usual weekend crowd. Candles flickered softly on the table, their shadows dancing on the walls, but the real fire was in the subtle tension and unspoken words between them.

Tade stirred his drink slowly, watching Aduni's hands trace the rim of her glass. He had always admired the way she carried herself strength wrapped in sharp wit but tonight, he felt the weight of something deeper pressing against the walls she built.

"Aduni," he began carefully, his voice calm but deliberate, "I've been meaning to ask you something for a long time… but I waited. I wanted you to… find your footing first. With your family, with everything."

Aduni raised an eyebrow, half curious, half skeptical. "Find my footing? You mean survive the circus that is my life?" she said with her trademark sarcasm, though her voice betrayed a small warmth.

Tade smiled faintly, leaning forward.

"Something like that. But I also wanted to understand what you want… in your life, in your family. You've seen how chaos can tear people apart. I want to know what kind of family you envision, what kind of partnership would matter to you."

Aduni leaned back, letting herself consider the question. For once, there were no insults, no interruptions just sincerity.

"A family… is built on respect, trust, and shared vision. I've seen the opposite, so I know what I won't accept. I want honesty, patience, and someone who doesn't mistake control for love." She paused, watching Tade closely. "Why are you asking all this, Tade?"

He set down his glass and let his gaze meet hers directly. "Because, Aduni… I don't want just friendship. I want something serious with you. Something real. I've been waiting, watching, hoping you'd calm down from all the storms around you, your family, your life… so that I could see the real you. The one I can fight for, support, and care for."

Aduni's lips curved into a small, incredulous smile. "You mean, after watching me survive an entire family war, being harassed by exes, dodging lunatics, and rearranging the lives of half the people around me… you think you're ready for me?"

Tade's smile deepened, but there was a seriousness there that cut through her sarcasm. "I know I can't fix your past, Aduni. And I don't want to. But I can promise to treat you better than anyone ever has. More carefully. More fairly. More… completely. I'm not here for games. I want a future. With you."

Aduni was silent for a moment, the words sinking in. For years, she had been burned by family, exes, and even society's expectations. Yet here was a man, calm, patient, observant, willing to wait for her not push her, not demand her attention, but wait for her to be ready.

"I've always had to fight… for space, for respect, for life," she said finally, her voice softer, almost vulnerable. "If I let someone in, it has to be… different. It has to matter."

Tade reached across the table, gently brushing his hand against hers. "Then let it matter. Let's start there. No rushing. No forcing. I'll respect every part of your life, Aduni. I'll respect you. And when the time comes… we'll see how great it can be, together."

Aduni studied his face, the earnestness in his eyes, the quiet patience in his posture. Something inside her softened just enough to allow herself to imagine, not a fantasy, but a real possibility a partnership built on respect, care, and understanding.

She gave a faint, teasing smirk. "I hope you understand… it's going to take more than nice words to survive me."

Tade leaned back, relaxed but confident, a small grin forming. "I'm ready for that. More than ready."

The evening settled into a calm rhythm two people, finally allowed to speak honestly, to imagine something beyond chaos, beyond sarcasm, beyond the fights and dramas that had consumed their worlds. And for the first time, Aduni allowed herself to think… maybe, just maybe, this could be something real.
