The bedroom door clicked open.
I glanced over from my position by the window. Aisha slipped inside Kairen's room, her expression soft, concerned. The door closed behind her with a quiet finality.
And then—silence.
I returned my attention to the street below, scanning for movement, for anything out of place. The neighborhood was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that made my skin itch.
Kaito had disappeared into the second bedroom, muttering under his breath. I could hear him moving around in there, slamming drawers, probably nursing his bleeding nose and his wounded pride.
Good.
I leaned against the wall, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the window. Hours passed. The sun set. The street lights flickered on. Shadows stretched across the pavement.
Inside Kairen's room, I could hear muffled voices. Low. Soft. Aisha's voice, soothing. Kairen's, barely audible, cracking at the edges.
I didn't move.
