In a pile of debris and rotten leaves they fell, landing face-down — even the so-called majestic dragon wasn't spared. Travis shook his head in pure frustration.

Derek shook his head to fling off the leaves clinging to his mane, and when he looked up he froze. They were right in the middle of a hoard — dozens of twisted, rope-like creatures with humanoid legs, all wriggling and staggering toward them at unsettling speed.
"Come! We have to run!!!" he shouted, scooping both cubs into his arms before rushing toward Travis, who was still stunned from the fall. In his frantic hurry to reach his beloved, Derek collided with Theodore, shoving him aside without hesitation so he could grab Travis.
"Papa, what's going on??" Henry asked in his tiny innocent voice.
