Maya's POV
I stare at the photo of Ethan and Marcus shaking hands. My mother's face flashes in my mind the accident that wasn't really an accident.
"What does my mother have to do with any of this?" I whisper.
Sophie reads Vanessa's message over my shoulder. "This is getting really scary, Maya."
My phone rings. It's Derek calling from the hospital.
"Maya." His voice sounds hollow. "You were right. Vanessa's lying about the pregnancy."
Relief floods through me. "How do you know?"
"The doctors ran tests. She's not pregnant. She never was." Derek sounds exhausted. "She faked the whole thing. Even the bleeding was fake she used some kind of theatrical blood packet."
"Where is she now?"
"She ran when the doctors told her the results. Just... disappeared from the hospital." Derek sighs heavily. "The media is still outside though. They're asking me questions about the fake pregnancy. My father showed up too."
My stomach twists. "What did James say?"
