Maya's POV
Paramedics rush Derek into the ambulance. Blood covers his shirt and face.
"I'm coming with him!" I try to climb in.
"Family only," a paramedic says, blocking me.
"I'm the mother of his child!" The words burst out before I can stop them.
The paramedic lets me in. Ethan starts to follow, but I shake my head.
"Stay here. Find out who did this to him."
Ethan's face shows hurt, but he nods. "Be careful."
The ambulance doors slam shut. We speed toward the hospital with sirens blaring.
Derek's eyes flutter open during the ride. "Maya?"
"I'm here." I squeeze his hand. "Don't talk. Save your strength."
"Had to... warn you..." Derek coughs, wincing in pain. "Vanessa... planning something... bigger..."
"What do you mean?"
But Derek passes out again before he can answer.
At the hospital, doctors rush him into surgery. A nurse tells me he has internal bleeding and a serious head injury. They won't know more for hours.
