Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Harry Potter Sighting

Chapter 14: The Harry Potter Sighting

July thirty-first arrived with summer heat that made Diagon Alley's cobblestones shimmer like mirages, and Adam Wright was arranging his afternoon display when the commotion began. Voices rose near Gringotts, the excited babble of a crowd that had spotted something extraordinary.

"Harry Potter!"

The name cut through market noise like a blade, and Adam's hands stilled on the potion bottles he'd been positioning. For months, Harry Potter had been an abstract concept—a name in newspapers, a figure in stories, the protagonist of a narrative Adam couldn't directly influence. But the crowd's excitement made everything suddenly, viscerally real.

Adam abandoned his stall without thought, pushing through the gathering wizards and witches who pressed close to glimpse the famous boy. His heart hammered against his ribs as he shouldered past gawking tourists and whispering locals, driven by desperate curiosity to see the person around whom everything revolved.

There—emerging from Gringotts with Hagrid towering beside him and the unmistakable red hair of the Weasley family creating a protective barrier—was him.

Harry Potter. The Boy Who Lived.

Messy black hair that defied all attempts at control. Round glasses that caught the afternoon light. Green eyes that seemed uncomfortable with the attention focused on him from every direction. He looked exactly like the books described and nothing like Adam had expected—smaller somehow, younger, more fragile than someone carrying the weight of the wizarding world's hopes should be.

"He's just a kid. Barely older than me, and they've made him responsible for everything."

Harry laughed at something Ron Weasley said, the sound carrying clear and genuine through the crowd's murmur. Beside them, Hermione Granger walked with the confident posture of someone who belonged in this magical world despite her Muggle heritage. The trio moved together with the easy familiarity of established friendship, their bond visible in small gestures and shared glances.

Adam's chest ached with sudden, overwhelming loneliness. They had each other. They had a destiny, a story, a clear purpose in the grand narrative unfolding around them. What did he have? A false identity, a struggling business, and knowledge he couldn't share with anyone who mattered.

But the ache was accompanied by something else—recognition of opportunity. Harry was here, real and accessible, walking through Diagon Alley like any other wizard. This was Adam's chance to warn him about the Chamber of Secrets, to share the knowledge that might save lives when the basilisk began hunting students.

"I can help them. I know what's coming."

Adam pushed forward, calling out desperately, "Harry! Harry Potter!"

Harry turned at the sound of his name, confusion creasing his features as he searched for the source. When his eyes found Adam—a young merchant in simple robes, wild-eyed with urgency—his expression shifted to polite wariness.

"You need to be careful this year!" Adam said, the words tumbling out in a rush of desperation. "There's danger at Hogwarts—the Chamber of Secrets—"

But the curse that had silenced him for over a year struck with familiar malice. The warning that should have saved lives became: "You need to be careful this year! There's danger at Hogwarts—the PURPLE BANANA CHAMBER OF DANCING TEAPOTS—"

Harry's confusion deepened into something approaching alarm. Ron stepped forward protectively, his hand moving toward his wand. "What's your problem, mate?"

Adam tried again, pouring every ounce of will into forcing the truth past his cursed tongue: "Voldemort has left something in the school—"

"RAINBOW PONIES have left something in the school—SINGING OCTOPUS LORDS—"

"Are you mocking us?" Hermione's voice carried the sharp edge of someone whose patience had been exhausted by unwelcome attention.

The crowd around them had grown larger, drawn by the spectacle of someone apparently harassing the Boy Who Lived. Adam realized how he must look: wild-eyed, desperate, spouting nonsense that sounded like the ravings of an unbalanced mind. Every attempt to help only made him appear more dangerous, more unstable.

"Come on," Harry said quietly, his discomfort obvious. "Let's go."

The trio moved away, Hagrid's bulk clearing a path through the crowd while Adam stood frozen in the street. He'd tried to be the helpful transmigrator, the guide with future knowledge who could smooth the protagonist's path. Instead, he was the crazy merchant who harassed children with incomprehensible warnings.

[MISSION FAILED: WARN HARRY POTTER]

[NO REWARD]

The System's judgment felt like a physical blow, confirming what Adam already knew—he'd failed completely. Worse than failed; he'd potentially made things more difficult by marking himself as someone to avoid.

But as Adam trudged back to his abandoned stall, another message appeared:

[NEW MISSION AVAILABLE: PROTECT FROM THE SHADOWS]

[REWARD: 5,000 SP]

Adam stared at the text floating in his vision, processing its implications. The System wasn't asking him to befriend Harry or join the adventures or be recognized as a hero. It was asking him to work from the shadows—invisible, unknown, effective.

"Maybe that's my role. Not the hero, but the hidden force that keeps the hero alive."

The thought was both depressing and liberating. He wouldn't get credit or friendship or acknowledgment. Harry Potter would never know that Adam Wright existed, let alone that he was trying to help. But he could still matter. He could still use his knowledge to influence events, to save lives, to tip the balance toward good without needing anyone's approval.

The trio's laughter echoed from somewhere deeper in the alley, three friends enjoying their shopping expedition while completely unaware of the dangers waiting in the coming school year. Adam settled behind his stall and began planning.

He couldn't warn them directly. But he could prepare. He could position himself to intervene when the moment came. He could be the shadow that protected them without their knowledge or consent.

It wasn't the role he'd dreamed of, but it was the role he could fill. And perhaps, in the end, that would be enough.

[MISSION ACCEPTED: PROTECT FROM THE SHADOWS]

The war was far from over. In fact, it was about to begin in earnest.
