Chapter 15: Summer's End
Late August settled over London like a held breath, and Adam Wright stood in his Knockturn Alley room sorting through Daily Prophet headlines with the methodical precision of someone preparing for war. The newspapers spread across his bed told a story of mounting dread: "Chamber of Secrets: Heir Returns?" "Hogwarts Safety Questioned." "Dumbledore Assures Parents—But Should They Believe?"
"They have no idea what's coming. And I can't tell them."
Adam's SP total had climbed to 2,000 points through careful mission completion and shrewd business management. His merchant cover was secure, his reputation solid, his Galleon reserves approaching 3,500 after expenses. But none of that mattered when he knew a basilisk would soon be hunting Muggle-born students through Hogwarts' corridors.
The System Shop beckoned with defensive options that might keep him alive when the crisis reached its peak. Adam navigated to his priorities: Protego Level 2 - 1,200 SP for stronger shields that could potentially deflect a basilisk's gaze, and Reparo Upgrade - 500 SP because the coming conflict would leave destruction in its wake.
The purchases confirmed, new knowledge flooded his mind. The upgraded Protego formed larger barriers with significantly improved durability—still maintaining a faint pink sparkle that marked them as System-enhanced, but the prank effect was weakening as his skill increased. The improved Reparo could mend complex magical damage, restore broken enchantments, even reverse some forms of cursed destruction.
"1,700 SP spent. 300 remaining. I'm betting everything on survival."
That afternoon brought an unexpected visitor to his stall. Madam Adelphi approached with uncharacteristic heaviness in her step, her usual cheerful demeanor replaced by something approaching despair.
"Adam, dear," she said quietly, glancing around to ensure they wouldn't be overheard. "I wanted to let you know... I'm withdrawing my granddaughter from Hogwarts this year."
Adam's hands stilled on the potion bottles he'd been arranging. "May I ask why?"
"The rumors. Ancient monsters, chambers of secrets, students in danger." She touched her throat nervously. "I won't risk Helena's safety for the sake of her education. There are other schools, safer places."
"She's terrified. And she should be."
"I'm sure Dumbledore—" Adam began, then caught himself as the curse twisted his words. "—PURPLE BANANA MAN—will handle—DANCING TEAPOT SITUATIONS—"
Madam Adelphi's expression shifted to concern mixed with pity. She patted his hand with grandmother's gentleness. "Of course, dear. I'm sure everything will be fine."
But her tone suggested otherwise, and after she left, Adam slumped behind his stall feeling the familiar weight of helpless knowledge. He wasn't alone in his fears—several other families had quietly withdrawn their children or were keeping them home. The magical community sensed approaching danger even if they couldn't articulate its nature.
That evening's Prophet carried letters from concerned parents demanding answers, Dumbledore's dismissive responses, and a quote from Lucius Malfoy that made Adam's blood boil: "Perhaps new leadership is needed at Hogwarts. The current administration seems... inadequate to the challenges facing our children."
"Bastard. He's the one planting the diary, and he's positioning himself to benefit from the chaos it creates."
The political maneuvering was sickeningly transparent to someone who knew the truth. Lucius would let students suffer to advance his agenda, then present himself as the solution to problems he'd created. The corruption ran deeper than Adam had imagined.
A week later, Mr. Borgin returned to Adam's stall with the predatory smile of someone who'd discovered leverage.
"I hear you have... information," he said without preamble. "Intelligence. Perhaps documents of a sensitive nature?"
Adam's spine went rigid. Borgin knew about the Death Eater ledgers—somehow, impossibly, the criminal network had connected him to the warehouse heist.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Adam replied carefully.
Borgin's smile widened. "A mutual friend mentioned your... acquisition at the docks last December. Impressive work for someone so young."
"How? I was invisible, alone, careful."
"I was never at any docks," Adam said, but sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cool evening air.
"Of course not. But if you ever wish to sell information..." Borgin leaned closer, his breath carrying the smell of dark magic and old malice. "I pay well. And I protect my associates from... inconvenient questions."
The threat was clear beneath the offer. Borgin wanted the stolen ledgers to protect his criminal allies, and he was implying that Adam's cover as a harmless merchant boy was thinner than he'd believed. The Death Eater network had eyes everywhere, memories longer than governments, and patience that outlasted ordinary justice.
After Borgin departed, Adam sat alone in his stall and processed the implications. His theft of Voldemort's war chest had consequences beyond immediate wealth—he'd marked himself as a threat to powerful, dangerous people. The cover identity that had seemed so secure was cracking under scrutiny from those who profited from darkness.
[MILESTONE REACHED: ONE YEAR SINCE TRANSMIGRATION]
[SPECIAL REWARD: 1,000 SP + NEW MISSION UNLOCKED: "ENTER HOGWARTS"]
September first arrived with autumn's first bite and the sight of families gathering at King's Cross Station. Adam watched from the Muggle side of the barrier as Hogwarts students boarded the Express—Harry, Ron, and Hermione together as always, other children saying goodbye to parents who tried to hide their fears about the coming school year.
"One year. I've survived one year in this world, and I'm still not where I need to be."
But the System's milestone recognition felt like validation. He'd grown from a broken orphan to someone with resources, skills, and purpose. The mission to enter Hogwarts appeared in his interface like a promise of future possibilities.
[MISSION ACCEPTED: ENTER HOGWARTS]
As the train disappeared into the distance carrying its cargo of students toward danger they couldn't comprehend, Adam turned away from King's Cross and began planning his next move. The game was changing.
