Gideon got busy afterward, barely able to focus on Noel. Now, he had to attend a meeting. He hated leaving the boy behind, but work demanded his presence.
"Stay here, don't move."
And Noel, as always, nodded obediently, eyes downcast.
Reluctantly, Gideon left. As he walked down the hallway toward the conference room, he paused when Danica's voice came from behind.
He turned and saw her coming with a grin. He instantly remembered what he had seen, his shoulders stiffening.
"Thanks, Gideon, for taking care of Noel," she said sweetly. "And sorry for crashing here so suddenly. But I'm really happy that you still care about me, about us." She reached out to hold his hand. "Come home early. Let's have dinner together."
He withdrew his hand instantly, stuffing it into his pocket to avoid her touch. His expression cooled several degrees. "How is your hand now?" he asked, his tone clipped. "What did the doctor say?"
"Oh…" Danica blinked, momentarily thrown off.
