Chapter 11 - 'Bad reputation'

Lex looked up in surprise, because in his 'memory', this Town had always been very peaceful.

Even during the annual holiday peak season, when a large number of tourists poured in, and conflicts with the local residents of the Town increased, it never led to deaths.

But now, a murder had occurred, and there were two of them.

"What exactly happened?"

Facing Lex's inquiry, the darker-skinned young servant shook his head: "I don't know very clearly."

"I only know that the first murder was at 89 Kingston Road, where a mother and son were tragically killed in their house. I heard they were bitten to death by wild dogs, but only the Police Station probably knows the exact reason."

"The second one happened last night at the 'Blue Fish Inn', and I am equally unclear about the specifics."

"I only know that these cases will affect the reputation of our Town, and may even affect tourists' choices during the holiday peak season."

Lex nodded in agreement, recalling the Chief of Police Station who had rushed over last night, perhaps this was why Kaosi had conversed with his father late into the night.

After feeding the pigeons, Lex patted his clothes and stood up: "Let's go, we're going home."

Matthew asked for instructions: "Shall I call a carriage?"

"No, it's still early to go back, I want to walk."

Lex transferred his cane to his right hand, adjusted his top hat, and walked out of the square.

Not far from the square, at an alley entrance, a figure suddenly rushed out of the alley and bumped into Lex's leg.

Lex looked down and saw that it was a little girl of eight or nine years old. She was wearing a dirty dress, had coarse hair, and snot was running from her nose.

She was carrying a basket, which contained oranges and apples, likely to be sold on the street.

Now, these fruits were scattered all over the ground.

"Sorry, sorry."

The little girl quickly got up, took out a handkerchief, and tried to wipe the dirty spot on Lex's trouser leg.

Matthew quickly stopped her.

The little girl looked up pitifully at the young man in front of her with black messy hair, dark green eyes, and slightly pale skin: "Sorry, sir. Kaliena didn't mean to…"

She suddenly noticed a faint scar like a tear stain under Lex's left eye, and she froze.

Then, her expression almost turned to tears: "Young Master Lex?"

It seems I really am a celebrity in the Town, even able to scare children into crying. Lex muttered to himself helplessly.

Kaliena was so scared at this moment that she plopped down on the ground, flustered.

She often heard her family talk about Lex's 'fierce reputation', and often heard them describe the appearance of this son of a baron, so when she saw the characteristic 'tear stain', she immediately knew who she had bumped into.

The little girl had already begun to imagine that she would be severely beaten next, and then her family would be implicated by her and driven out of Enki Town.

Just then, she indeed saw Lex reaching out towards her with his cane.

Kaliena, in fear, hugged her head with her hands, only hoping that Lex would be gentler later, but she found that the cane hooked up the basket and placed it at her feet.

"Pick up the fruit." The devilish young master's voice was indifferent and his tone was firm, making people dare not disobey.

Kaliena picked up the fruit with trembling little hands, her mind blank, wondering how this terrifying man would punish her next.

She then saw Lex bend down, pick up an apple, wipe it on his sleeve, and take a bite.

He then said to the male servant beside him: "Take them away."

Kaliena immediately breathed a sigh of relief; it was only taking away a basket of fruit, which was much lighter than the punishment she had expected.

Then, she noticed that Lex's gaze hadn't left, and he was still looking at her with a terrifying expression.

"You haven't said how much they cost."

When the little girl heard the devilish young master say this, she didn't react for a moment, until the male servant beside her reminded her again, then she timidly said.

"5 pence, sir."

Lex pulled out a 1-pound banknote from his wallet and put it into Kaliena's hand: "I don't have such small denominations."

Standing up again, he did not linger and walked forward.

He heard the girl behind him let out a cheer of relief and smiled slightly.

He was struggling to figure out how to change his reputation. As it turned out, an opportunity presented itself. Lex believed that with the help of this little tool. Ahem, little girl.

Well, through this little girl, the people in the Town would receive the signal that 'the Baron's son is changing'.

Of course, this alone was not enough, but it was already a good start.

Just then, he suddenly heard a scream from the alley behind him.

Kaliena!

Lex's expression changed, he turned past the male servant, and rushed towards the alley entrance.

Matthew heard his young master say something like 'my tool cannot be in trouble' as he passed, which left him a bit bewildered, but he still threw the fruit basket by the roadside and chased after him.

Lex had already rushed into the alley. This alley was winding, narrow, and dim.

He quickly saw Kaliena, the little girl seemed to be greatly frightened, sitting on the ground. She suddenly turned around and crawled towards him.

At this moment, behind Kaliena, a dark shadow pounced. Its movements and posture looked less like a person and more like a famished wild dog!

Lex didn't think much, he slid forward, using his cane as a weapon, sweeping it horizontally.

He could already imagine the dark shadow being swept away by the cane, but the opponent was exceptionally agile. The dark shadow stopped in time and leaped back with an inhuman posture, retreating into a darker corner of the alley.

At this moment, Lex smelled an indescribable peculiar odor, which seemed to contain the smell of blood and the stench of excrement, mixed into a nauseating and foul smell.

He also saw a leg sticking out from behind several wooden crates in front. Under that leg, fresh blood flowed quietly, and an eyeball, still attached to nerves, floated and flowed in the blood.

Lex's mind went blank for a moment.

Is this the third murder?

Only a day has passed, and someone else has died?

I just got home, and I've encountered two incidents, and this time, the killer is right in front. It seems the Goddess has abandoned me.

Footsteps sounded, followed by Matthew's exclamation: "Young Master Lex, this is—"

Lex calmed himself, pointed his cane forward, pointing at the shadow in the corner, and shouted: "Matthew, quickly notify the police! There's a murder here, and the killer is right here!"

He hoped to scare off the killer with his words.

The amount of blood from the corpse behind the wooden crates, and the organs floating in the blood, all spoke of the perpetrator's brutality.

It was just like those madmen on the Alfalfa!

At this moment, he heard a strange sound from the shadow ahead.

"Ho, ho, ho..."

It sounded like gasping, and also like a beast's suppressed roar in its throat, full of menace, making one's scalp tingle.

Fortunately, the dark shadow gradually retreated, followed by a rapid sound of footsteps, fading into the distance.

That thing is gone.

As Lex just breathed a sigh of relief, he heard voices from the alley entrance. He turned his head and saw the old woman who had been lecturing in the square earlier, and several workers, walking in.

They saw the foot behind the wooden crates, saw the eyeball floating in the blood, and saw Lex on high alert. The old woman named Paris immediately screamed: "Murder!"

Every wrinkle on her face trembled, and her turbid eyes, faintly gleaming with a grayish luster, showed a strange excitement. She stretched out her fingers, like chicken claws, and pointed at Lex.

"It's him! The Baron's son, he killed someone!"
