Chapter 31 - A Clue

Through Kaosi's introduction, Lex learned the names of the three Inspectors.

The one with black-rimmed glasses was Lewis, the pale-skinned one was Jeffrey, and the Miss Red-Hair was Martha.

After Bison took his seat, the Inspector named Lewis directly stated their purpose: "Sir Bison, we are here hoping to get Mr. Lex's assistance."

"According to the information provided by the Enki Town Police Station, we found that Mr. Lex has faced the 'Hunter' at least twice."

To be precise, it was three times, if you count last night's encounter, Lex silently corrected in his heart.

Lewis continued.

"And yesterday, he also solved a murder and body concealment case. If we can get help from such an excellent gentleman, I believe we can solve this matter quickly and smoothly."

The curvaceous Miss Red-Hair Martha, who was eating candy, also spoke up: "Besides, we just arrived in the Town and still lack a guide."

Bison, however, frowned and said directly: "I apologize, officers, I appreciate your admiration for Lex, but this case is too dangerous, and I don't want my child involved."

"I believe Kaosi has plenty of more capable individuals under him who can assist you. As for a guide, you don't need to worry; I can provide a better candidate."

Lewis seemed unwilling to give up so easily. He pushed up his glasses and said: "Sir, please rest assured, we are fully capable of protecting Mr. Lex's safety."

Lex turned slightly, leaning towards his father, and whispered: "Father, I believe Inspector Lewis and his colleagues have this capability."

"If my participation can resolve this matter as soon as possible, I am willing to join."

Lex had his own thoughts.

That monster clearly wanted to kill him, which is why it snuck into the villa last night.

Instead of passively defending, it would be better to actively hunt by leveraging these 'experts'.

Moreover, through this matter, he could deepen his 'Hunter' role-playing and accelerate the digestion of the potion.

Kaosi also said: "Three bloody cases have already occurred, and we must quickly restore peace to the Town. Mr. Bison, the peak season for vacations is approaching, and we must deal with this matter before then."

Bison looked at Lex, then at Inspector Lewis, and finally nodded: "Alright, but just as you said, you must be responsible for his safety."

"No problem."

As soon as Lewis agreed, there was a sound of voices at the door, and then the gray-bearded butler Sebastian walked in and whispered something in Bison's ear.

"Oh, is that so?"

Bison adjusted his expression and smiled: "Gentlemen, perhaps now I can provide you with a clue related to the bloody case."

This was said to Lewis and his colleagues. Bison then instructed Sebastian: "Bring him in."

A moment later, the coachman Old Cook walked in. Seeing so many people in the hall, the dark-skinned old man appeared a bit reserved.

Bison stood up, made a brief introduction, and then said: "Cook, tell these officers what you wanted to say."

Lewis and the other two exchanged curious glances, then the middle-aged officer took out a notebook and a fountain pen, opened it, and prepared to record.

It seems his memory is not very good. Lex, who noticed this detail, whispered to himself.

Old Cook nodded, then said: "Master, a few days ago, you took an oil painting to the Police Station, didn't you? I glimpsed it at the time, and inexplicably felt that the face in the painting looked somewhat familiar."

"Yesterday I finally remembered, that's Ain's grandson. I saw this child last month. It was a terrifying deformed child, it's just that, it in the oil painting seems to have grown a lot."

"So I can't be sure, after all, how can a child grow so much in just one month?"

Bison said blankly: "Ain, which Ain?"

Father and I also have no impression, Lex said in his heart. When he heard the butler Matthew mention it before, his expression was just like Bison's now.

Lewis, however, stood up and said: "Can you take us to that Ain's house? We want to see his grandson with our own eyes."

Old Cook nodded: "I know where he lives, but I can't guarantee if he's home. I haven't seen that old fellow for almost a month."

Lex stood up: "I'll go too. I've seen the killer, so I can confirm it."

Seeing this, Bison couldn't stop him, so he said: "Then let Cook take you. You can use my carriage, the one with the sedan compartment."

Lewis took off his hat and nodded slightly: "That would be very kind, Sir."

So Old Cook drove, and Lex and the three Inspectors shared a carriage, leaving the house and heading towards the outskirts of the Town.

Just in case, he brought his Snake Scales Revolver, but he didn't bring his 'Shadow Gauntlets', fearing that the 'experts' would discover it was an extraordinary weapon.

Inside the carriage, the Miss Red-Hair sitting opposite took out the tin box of candy again, shook out an orange-yellow candy from it, and handed it to Lex with a smile.

"For you."

I'm not a child anymore, Lex thought humorously, but still took it.

Sitting next to Martha, the pale-skinned Jeffrey looked at Lex and said: "Do you know which specialty store in the Town has a discount? I plan to take some back."

I don't know, really, I haven't paid attention to these.

Lex didn't answer, and Lewis, who was sitting next to him, cleared his throat: "Let's talk about that later, Jeffrey."

The Inspector with black-rimmed glasses and slightly prominent forehead wrinkles said seriously: "Mr. Lex, I'm very glad you can assist us."

"However, for your safety, I hope you remember that if danger arises, you must stay by my side."

"I remember," Lex responded seriously.

Soon, the carriage stopped, and Old Cook's voice came from outside the window: "Young Master Lex, three officers, Ain's house is just ahead."

The door opened, and Lex and the three others got out of the carriage successively. The carriage stopped at a fork in the road. At the end of this small path was a gloomy farmhouse.

As Lex had seen when he went to the lumber mill last time, the rubble wall of the farmhouse was covered with wild roses, and the dense trees around it blocked the sunlight.

The empty plot next to it, enclosed by wooden stakes, looked even more desolate, with weeds growing wildly, as if it had been abandoned.

However, the two large black dogs chained at the farmhouse entrance were still as energetic as ever, barking incessantly at Lex and his companions from afar.

Lewis was about to go forward, but heard the Miss Red-Hair Martha call out: "Wait a moment."

She pulled out a silver chain with a red crystal pendant from her unfathomable cleavage and took it off her neck.

She held the silver chain in her hand, letting the crystal pendant hang naturally. After the swaying subsided, Martha seemed to be saying something.

The others couldn't hear it.

But Lex, as a 'Hunter', with his keen hearing, still caught some of it.

"...There is beyonder danger in the farmhouse in front of me."

Again and again, after exactly seven times, the red crystal pendant actually began to swing.

It rotated counter-clockwise, and the speed was not fast.

Is she performing divination? Danger caused by the extraordinary, they are indeed official personnel!

Lex felt inexplicably excited, feeling that he had integrated a little more into this world.
