Riley was ready to deny everything if he dared to come close to her. She had no strength for any drama today, not when her family would soon be laid to rest. If only Scott used his brain for once instead of acting in the worst way.
Luckily, Lilian stepped in and stopped Scott from coming any closer. While they argued, Riley turned back to Alistair. He was watching them, so she cleared her throat to pull his attention back. She felt embarrassed.
"I am sorry about my friends. Things have been messy around here," she said quietly.
"It is alright, Miss Riley," Alistair replied with a warm smile as he looked down at her. Standing so tall, he made her feel small, yet safe. "So what did you say about my offer?"
"Yes, I am in," she said and reached out her hand. He shook it, and his smile grew deeper. A cold shiver ran through her. She did not know why she felt something the moment their hands touched.
